What language would be best to learn for doing Vegas scripting would be

You have your choice of VB, Java Script, or C#. Whatever you're most comfortable with is my suggestion. However, if you want to use other pre-written scripts as a starting point, these are mostly written in Java Script and C#; with Java Script being the most common.

My personal choice is C#, but that's because I've had very limited interaction with Java Script.

Vegas scripts are based on Microsoft .NET Framework. I recommend you C#, which is the de facto standard for this platform
