Fix AVI File

I have an 90 min long video stored in a 20GB AVI file. It appeared that the file was corrupted during copying from one harddisk to another so that it couldn't be played by any player. However, when I add the file to Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.0 in editing mode, I can still see the whole video with sound. I tried to render it into another AVI file but the new AVI file had the same problem - couldn't be played. Is there anyway I can save this file? I already erased the original tape. I also tried a freeware but it failed to fix it. Thanks for your help!

It seems that the problem is not the copying of the file, but the fact that some older players don't read properly AVI files bigger than 2 GB in size (a common problem 10 years ago, although this is what might be happening now too).

Anyways, just export in h.264 MP4 using MainConcept. There's no reason for AVI codecs in this day and age. Set the right project properties to match your source file, and export as such in h.264 too.

Thanks for quick response. I have not tried to render to other format yet. But this appears not caused by 2GB limit since I have other 20GB size that can be played without any problem.

There's a few different file type avi's. You could try converting with a good freebie like Any Video Converter http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/

Maybe it's something else as my Vegas MSP 9.0a has stopped recognising AVI files already used many times after last upgrade to new build and even when uninstalling and reinstalling old build (85) still does not show video on these file types even old finished projects etc. only shows and edits audio....... the files are marked as "media offline" even when freshly loaded from a flashdrive to C drive from original source (laptop)
BTW the program on the laptop (which was not upgraded is still using, recognising and editing these AVI files OK as before.
The files are AVI (OpenDML) 1 video stream JPEG 1 audio stream PCM (Microsoft)
69.2Mbps, 720 x 480 (32), at 29.970fps JPEG (NTSC)

all settings are left as default on new install and they still do not work......

I cannot (or will not) reformat the hundreds of files already in projects and were working fine... so what is the answer here...... maybe a codec lost somewhere? but the files all run OK on windows media player and other programs as is.
They were originally captured with debut if that's any help. most around 2GB each
any suggestions?
