Fix focus breathing

Is there any good way to fix focus breathing in Sony Vegas? Had the camera on autofocus and there are a few spots where the camera jumps in and out of focus, didn't see it while filming. I shot locked on a tripod, so the scene is otherwise stable.

I tried using video stabilization with no good results. Loss of focus is not the worst part of the problem, but the camera zooms in closer for a split second then back out.

@Jeffery-Yentzer - I feel your pain. Take a deep breath….. I don’t know of such software? Could that “split second” be part of a Transition, from one moment to the other? Is there any B-roll you could utilise?

I was going to buy a cheaper lens with focus breathing, so I searched out how it could be dealt with. Bookmarked this video at 7:40 It uses the free Davinci Resolve with it's stabilization modes. Sounds like it depends on each scene as to how well it will work or what mode to us. I got the more expensive cinema lens and have not tried with Vegas (translation mode) or Resolve

@Former user - Thanks for the info!

Thanks for this good tip.

I tried installing Davinic resolve, but it won't run on my computer. Looks like GPU is not compatible.

No B roll unfortunately, just one shot locked on tripod the whole time.

@Jeffery-Yentzer

One possible solution is to export the problem frames as an image sequence.

Then you can test if it’s possible to fix the focus breathing / unsharp frames using TOPAZ Sharpen AI.

Take at look at this video:

Or, if the focus breath is short enough, you could attempt to use the warp flow transition.

I love Topaz Sharpen AI and use it regularly for my stills but I doubt that it would be a great tool for fixing focus breathing where the change of focus in an uncorrected lens gives the appearance of zooming on the scene. The following video does a good job of explaining this effect.

If I were attempting to fix focus breathing in Vegas, I'd try pan/crop and key frame the event.
