Flashing/flickering frames when doing transitions

tomol012 wrote on 7/20/2012, 4:16 AM
Hi,
I have a problem with Movie Studio 11. When I try to make a transition between two movie events, single frames start to show up at 100% opacity. To understand my problem better, please watch this sample video I uploaded to YouTube:

It wouldn't be a problem at all if after rendering, the video looked good, but as you can see Vegas renders the video with a problem.

It happens while working on .AVI files made by Praktica camcorder. It's not happening with other files, but conversion is not an option. Also it would not solve the problem, only bypass it and I need it fixed :-)

What is also weird, turns out, I don't even have to make a transition to have this problem. It's enough when one event is above another ( http://i48.tinypic.com/3523i9h.jpg ) and effect is similar:

Thank you for your support,
Tom

Please post your media properties (MediaInfo from Sourceforge), your Project Properties and Render Properties in Vegas.

Also, upload an original camera clip somewhere so others can look at it.

Thank you very much for replying :)

Properties are set (using presets) to "DVD Architect PAL widescreen". Changing field order and frame rate doesn't help.

Media properties are different (different framerate, resolution, they are also AVI and project in MPG), but as said before, changing properties doesn't help. Match media settings option in Vegas doesn't help aswell, because I tried it before on other project.

In order for anyone to be able to help, we need to know full and specific information about the CODECS used to shoot your video. One way to get this information is with a freeware utility called MediaInfo that can be downloaded from Sourceforge. There are hundreds of codecs that can be enclosed in the AVI wrapper, and tens of thousands of variations..

You want to encode a PAL Widescreen DVD? We need to know your exact Vegas version, Project properties, and Render properties (because adjustments may be needed), along with a sample of your original camera footage. This all goes double if you are encoding at a different frame rate than your source?????

If you are willing to help us to help you, it is unlikely to be a disappointment. But if you are not, best of luck.

Ok, if you say so :-)
Vegas version is Movie Studio Platinum 11 HD, build 295

Here is the footage from camera:

Here is how your NTSC footage will look rendered to PAL in Vegas (right click and "Save Link As"):
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/20519276/Untitled3.mpg

Here are the instructions:
1. Download and install the x264vfw codec from Sourceforge. This will enable Vegas to correctly open your nonstandard files.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/x264vfw/
Never install a codec "package" from third-party download sites.

2. Set your Project props exactly like this starting with the "Match Media" icon. Since you are changing the size and frame rate, they do make a difference. In this case, you will want to leave your Event properties to "Smart Resample," because disabling resample would cause the output to be jumpy due to 1/6 total dropped frames.

3. Open the "DVD Architect PAL Widescreen video" template. Click the "Custom" button, make sure rendering is set to "Best" and check "Stretch video to fill output."
Set your video Render Properties exactly like this. Yes, it is going to take quite a while to render.

4. Render your audio separately to AC3 DVD stereo.

5. If you will render to NTSC Widescreen the results will be even better. Almost all PAL DVD players will play NTSC DVDs. If you are interested in doing this, just ask, because the other settings will be different. For best results in the future, shoot your footage in the same format and a frame rate compatible with your output.

6. Keep in mind that this is a peer support forum. No one is being paid or required to respond to your questions, but we do it because of our shared interest in video editing. Now that you know how to get help on this forum, your ongoing awareness of this fact is appreciated.

Thank you so much for your time helping me! I appreciate this :-)

So, as I understand, in the future I should always match media settings for the project and change them while rendering final video, is that correct ?

It's all very helpful, but my biggest problem is not gone... Single frames are still moving around the event and destroy the transitions :-(

You have Installed the vfwx264 codec?
You did restart your computer?
You haven't installed any other codec "packs"?

Start with a fresh project. Before putting anything on the timeline, make sure "Quantize to Frames" is turned "On." Double-check the rest of the instructions I gave you.

Matching media settings is usually the best place to start with the Project. No, you don't want to change the Project settings before rendering (Vegas takes care of that for you)!

In some cases of mixed media types, generated media, etc. you may want to match the output settings, but that is a different topic.

When you overlap events to create a transition, do not grab the edge of the event and drag it! That creates a loop. Instead, grab the body of the event and move the whole event over to overlap the desired amount.

This, and hundreds of other beginning topics are covered in the interactive tutorials that came with your program.

Ok, I don't have problem using the program :-) I have a problem with SINGLE frames moving in unwanted way around the event. And it is a bug...
I've had this problem ever since I'm working with files recorded with my Praktica camcorder. It's something between files and program.

I did what you told me to. Codecs thing aswell.

Unable to reproduce the behavior on Vegas Pro with the x264vfw codec installed. Transitions are as expected.

This is the first time Praktica footage has been discussed here afaik, but the codec solves decoding issues on my machine.

Some causes of random frame behavior are faulty RAM, Quantize to Frames not enabled before placing media on the timeline, corrupt project, or nasty codec packs. Search the pro forum for some more discussion.
Best of luck.

Thank you very much! You helped me a lot :-)

I'll try formating my PC and starting fresh. You shown me x264vfw codec, but what about the others? It doesn't cover everything doesn't it ? What would you recomend.
I promise, this is my last question :-)

Once in a while, you may need to install an individual codec for a strange file type. All you have to do is post the MediaInfo properties here and someone will help. Never, never install a codec "pack" from a third party.
