Flicker at bottom of captured video

Hi,

My first post here - Just bought Vegas + DVD Architect.

I have captured a couple of Digital 8 tapes (DV format data?) with a brand new camera, and am getting a slight flicker at the bottom of the resulting file. The tapes were shot using a different camera. Is this an issue with the original camera that recorded the tapes, something with the playback camera, or some setting that I am missing? Does the field order setting during capture affect this? Are all NTSC DV and Digital 8 formats always setup the same way with regard to field order - do I need to think about this at all?

Thanks!

Shenan

It's not field order, it's time error. It *may* be corrected using the original cam, but likely won't be. Capturing via analog, using a Time Base Corrector will usually turn the trick. Or, just simply use Pan/Crop in Vegas to remove the offending pixels.

Some camcorders which use electronic image stabilization in the camera will cause a type of flicker at the top and bottom of the image. EIS is used in all the D8 camcorders and a lot of the low to midrange DV camcorders as well. This "flicker" is in the "overscan" area and will not be visible on a television when you play it back. Also, video which originated on VHS tape has a significant amount of grunge at the bottom of the frame due to head switching noise, but it isn't visible on a television either. It is visible on the computer since you are seeing the entire frame and it isn't being masked in what would normally be the "invisible" overscan area.

I always get the flicker, and as mentioned by John Cline -- never shows up on the TV screen, only on the computer monitor. My original tapes were analog Hi8, and playback is on Digital8 into Vegas. DV shots with the Digital8 camera are flicker free.

Yup . .I ALWAYS get this with Analogue captures. Never with DV captures. For me it shows in the Underscan areas. Once rendered and Printed to tape [ VHS ] it is there.
