Flicker in stills

I know there has been some discussion on this, but I was unable to find an answer. If there is a particular post with the answer, please point the way.

I am creating a slide show with stills taken with a digital camera, jpeg format. When viewed on a TV, I get a flicker on some patterns (ex: a checkered shirt).

I'm rendering as an AVI and then converting to a MPEG2 with TMPeng and burnging onto an SVCD.

Thanks for the help.

Some patterns (i.e. stripes, checkered) don't look right when viewed on a television. You'll almost never see somebody wearing a striped shirt on tv. Is it possible that this is the case?

Thanks for the reply.

It might be the case. It's more than the fact that the image doesn't look right. It actually flickers. Could it be something with progressive or interlace?

I've noticed this when the picture is being panned, or zoomed, rotated. I think it's due to the (relatively) poor resolution.

I've had this as well. I did cure it but can't remember as of yet!

I think I re-rendered the film-clip in question - I think that did it. Don't ask me why it worked, but it did. I think I rendered a DV-AVI PAL and got this "flicker" on several stills that I had captured from the original film clip. I even got a captured "still" image of a chap playing a trombone - and the still trombone refused to remain still and appeared to be still sliding backwards and forwards - very weird!

Anyway - I think I re-rendered the clip to MPEG-1 ready to go to CDR burning. In the end I didn't burn one but I noticed that the "judder" had gone. As I say I don't know why or why the "effect" happens in the first place. Give it a test.

I have had some mild success by tonig down vibrant colors in stills which have given me this problem, I emphasize the word MILD, it may be worth a try though.

I would like to hear solutions to this as well. My camera can take reasonably high resolution stills as well and DV and I have made some SVCDs with 'slide shows' at the end. Some of the stills end up with annoying flicker.

I presume it must be related to interlacing - I think especially where there is a high contrast edge that is in one interlaced frame but not the next. I might try softening the image (which I hate to do because I love sharp images). I habitually sharpen things and that may be making he problem worse.

I think one of the easiest ways, without changing your original image or rendering to another format, is to go to FX, HSL Adjust, and then desaturate. You can adjust the saturation level to tone it down just slightly.

.... And don't wear shirts with stripes :)

....and definately don't play the trombone at the same time!

Thanks mollymac. I will have to give that a try.

Well did you try it Rob? I did - in a couple of different photos - and it seemed to reduce the flicker. Wish I had a flicker filter like they do in some other programs. Still wavering on whether to spend the $200 to upgrade to VV3. Does it have a flicker filter? Final Cut does, and it's said to help in both photos and in scrolling credits, which I basically stopped using because they jiggle too much.
