Flickering during transitions

Artbot wrote on 10/6/2002, 3:24 PM
I am getting some rough flickering during fade-ins and outs, but it only appears on compressed movies. I've tried 4 different codecs and they all do it, which makes me think it's something in my video output settings. Strangely, it doesn't do it when rendering to an uncompressed file. Any ideas what it might be? It's not really feasible to show our producer an 800meg uncompressed file.
Thanks,
Richard

Have you tried .avi/DV or WM using one of the stock templates? You should see no flickering.

I tried this, but the default templates are uncompressed formats. I found a sort-of workaround by rendering out to an uncompressed format, then loading that movie into a new file and rendering it out to a compressed file. Doesn't get rid of the flickering transitions entirely, but it does reduce them for some reason.

what kind of footage are you applying the transitions to? you can try to play with the render template options (accessible from 'Custom' button in the 'Render As...' dialog box). for example, i find that turning motion blur off for footage consisting of faded still images (non-interlaced source) helps the transitions. flicker can also be caused by wrong interlace settings (should usually be 'lower field first' for DV, but you can try other settings just in case). for interlaced source material, you can set the 'upper/lower field first' parameter from the event's 'Properties' dialog (right-click on event).

I'm cutting together mostly stills, mixed with a little bit of 3D animation rendered as uncompressed AVIs.

I will give your suggestions a try.
