Font artifacting in ProType Titler

I'm finding some annoying artifacts on standard fonts in ProType that don't show up in the old CG or other NLE CGs.

For instance, in a DV 60i project, take a standard font like Arial, size 2.5 in ProType, and type the letter "M". Set it for italic.

Notice the artifacts sticking up on top of both arms above the letter?

A number of different fonts are showing these kind of problems for me. Or else they are cutting off edges on one side of the font.

not quite sure what you're seeing, but they seem like they should for me in the preview window in both protype & vegas.

I noticed this too. I think this only happens when you render or preview to AVI. Render to MPEG2 and it goes away (at least for me).

if you increase the resolution of the event that might help. If it's when rendering it's anti-aliasing the text which normally looks better on TV. I think if you increase the event res it doesn't anti-alias as much.

I see this too but only on Capitalized M and W on Arial font when
you apply a style with a stroke width of over about 6 --- The M and W seem
to grow a spike at the top of the M and the bottom of the W...only noticeable
on superimposed titles.

Exactly, it's those spikes I'm talking about on M and W, and it's not just with Arial. I just hit it on another favorite font of mine, Monotype Corsiva.

Good news, I figured out the cause of the problem, and more importantly, a workaround so I can use the fonts that I want!

This also explains why some people saw the problem and some didn't.

The problem is totally based on the size of the edge you put on your text. If you keep the edge at 2 or less, you will not see the problem even when you make your text large. Larger than that, you start getting jagged sharp edges that shouldn't be there, but are. Using the same fonts in the old text program would give you smooth edges, no matter how wide, but not in ProType.

So now that you make your edges no wider than 2, you need to make up for the loss in edge density by playing with your shadow. But by doing that, you can recreate just about the same effect as a heavier edge.

This fixed the problem in all my fonts that had shown the problem.
