For MAIN VP Edit Screen - This BenQ Puppy - Please

Well, it's time to say goodbye to my LG 32", it's developed a nasty, annoying dark grey bloom reaching out from the bottom edge to the middle of the screen:

I still have my production DELL monitor. However, a good friend has suggested this BenQ PD3200U-T 32" IPS LED 4K UHD 3840 x 2160 HDMI Monitor. This will be a step up for me.

So, VegHeads, waddyah think?

The BenQ PD3200U seems to be a good monitor, even with an average price. Test results (sorry, in German) delivers a qualification as "good".

It seems to be a nice unit for video too - and important for us is, that one calibrates it.

However, it seems to be a little bit outdated maybe - since I do not find any offers any more. It was about 800 Euro.

Since you are talking about SDR-monitors only, I would also have a look to the models of EIZO. Even more expensive but in the test result "very good", but typically they have the hardware calibration hardware integrated (and the software Colornavigator is included too, what is a great software and a special recommendation). The Eizo CS2740 deliver a great picture for rec709 and SDR video and is another great recommendation for video and graphics.

@Wolfgang S. - Yes, it is old and the rear panel is scratched. I’m getting it off of EBay from a reputable EcoIT company that’s been around for a number of years. The price? Couldn’t resist the £165.74 price tag. Back in the day it would have been way north of £800. If it lasts for five to ten years I’ll be happy.

I should be receiving it early next week, I’ve got a friend coming over to help do the heavy lifting, fitting the post/s and setting up the connections, I’m still in post surgical recovery mode, but a lot further forward. This Panel needs to in place, much like my Quad Cardiac Bypass. I’m walking like a possessed Demon, on the Streets of London.

I recently got the Eizo CS2731 (floor model) and it's excellent for photo and fine for video. I like that you can calibrate it to different color gamuts and brightness- I keep it dim for work with text at night and then can switch to full gamut normal brightness for photo editing. My older NEC claimed to do that but the switching never worked properly.

165 pounds is incredible, and I'm sure the BenQ will serve you well.

@RogerS - Well, we’ll see. At this price I can afford the return to sender for full refund. Nothing to lose. It’s eBay 😜. MrsG bought me some new walking Sketchers AND I’m getting a replacement cartridge for my ancient HP laser jet today.

A calibration should be possible for the BenQ too - but at the level of Windows, not in the hardware. Since Vegas uses the HDMI connection from the GPU, that should work fine. For 165 Pound there cannot be much lost.

@manuelc, you mean the prad.de page? The prad.de page is one of the best pages for monitor testing - even if they publish in German.

However, typically many forget that the monitor is one of the most important bits and pieces for our editing. So it is worth to think about that in some more details.

What about the Display Port?

I mean you can spent a lot of money for your grading monitor. For HDR for example, it even becomes more expensive. The general advice seems to be: purchase the best possible monitor you can afford -for your purpose.

For me that was a lot of money, for HDR grading. It was this one here:

What about the Display Port?

Should be the same, for SDR and 4K. Only for HDR you should use HDMI 2.1, or the displayboard 1.4 (1.2 will not work for HDR, as far as I remember).

Right: the DisplayPort 1.2 only has support for up to 4K@120Hz resolution, while the DisplayPort 1.4 even supports max resolution up to 8K@60Hz with 10-bit color and HDR.

@Wolfgang S., thanks for the clarification. The video card is ready, the monitor, not so much. Considering maybe getting a new one.... maybe.

Mr. Ben Q arrived yesterday! Stunning! I've suddenly got so much more real estate for VP. The definition of Text and the Controls inside VP are wonderful. I picked up a dual arm support for £20 so both my monitors are "floating" in space.
