Format

Hello my fellow film makers,
My question: I trimmed a piece from a scene to insert it into the other coverage shot for the scene and in doing so, the trimmed portion converted from 16.9 format back to the regalur TV format ... why would it do this and how do I get it back into the 16.9 widescreen format?

Did you miss a keyframe when you clipped it? Did you have the widescreen pan/crop applied?
If not, just applying the Pan/Crop widescreen preset SHOULD bring it back, but not knowing how you achieved the widescreen in the first place, and not knowing the project settings makes it a shot in the dark to answer.
