Formatting my iPhone Video properly

Hello everyone!

This is a little difficult to explain and I do not know the proper name for this issue, so hopefully I may get redirected from the community or just simply answered on here.

INTRODUCTION

I would like to edit an iPhone video which was unfortunately filmed vertically. However, when I put the video into Sony Vegas MP4 format, the video is stuck to the middle of the screen in a proportional resolution to my iPhone screen (because it was filmed vertically). Now here is where it gets a little complicated for me to explain.

(If you want you can skip this next part and jump right into the main problem or main question. I guess both are kind of the same.)

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

I've tried dragging the video to the right and to the left, but it goes off the middle of the screen and disappears. This may be because the background footage resolution is not in the proper format. So I went to properties and changed the video settings to: HD 1080-60i (1920x1080, 29.970 fps). Okay, now the background is open (as I see the black blank background rather than a gray background that blended in with the software. This tells me I have more space to work with, or so I thought. I tried to disable maintain aspect ratio, and it made the video go to the resolution of 1920 x 1080. I also do not want that. I just want to resize the image and move it wherever I want in the background.

MAIN PROBLEM

The main problem is that if I do not click maintain aspect ratio, the video will be stuck in the middle of the frame, and when I try to move it or rotate it, it does not move freely around the 1920x1080 background I created, but rather disappears after leaving the initial background of whatever resolution the iPhone was set in Sony Vegas.

MAIN QUESTION

How can I move the iPhone video that was filmed vertically around the whole background rather than have it stuck in the middle.
