Forum gripe

Ok - so once again I have had to do the whole password/register/re-set thing. As Mozilla got messed up I didn't expect my cookies to really work but I did expect my password to work. But somehow installing Quicktime on my computer not only zapped Mozilla but also wnet into these forums and reset my info as well. At least the logon screen kept telling me it my password was wrong - it worked fine 3 days ago. So I go to the "forgot password?" page and I get asked to answer two questions - one of which is What is the middle name of your youngest sibling? ?!?!?!?! WTF??? Come on Sony Web team - why are you screwing with people? I have *never* answered that question - I do not have, nor ever have had, a younger sibling. Thinking this was some sort of "option" I left it balnk - I got an error. So I tried again and put in "NA" and still an error came back. I am thinking to myself: "How the hell do I answer this...and who the hell is forcing me to answer this bogus question?" So I went to the "register" page thinking that for some reason my whole account was nuked and someone had re-used my name and entered in my email for a new account - of course I got the "That email has already been used..." message. So I click on the "Reset password" link and I get a page to send an email - so I again enter in my email and I get a page saying that because I had answered my questions wrong I had to send the email to myself (???) and click on the "Send email to myself" button. I do so and get an email with a link. I click on it and am taken to the reset page - and low and behold there is an option to choose two questions in case you foget your email. FIrst time I have *ever* laid eyes on this. Needless to say I did not pcik the sibling question. But having said that - I sort of felt like I was trying to get some sort of home loan.

So here is my beef - since these Forums have been redone things keep getting stupid...why is this? Who is getting paid to make it so hard for users, old and new alike, to be able to simply sign on and post here? Complaints abound around here and frankly when SoFo ran this this ship I only had to sign up once, bookmark the page, and that was it...since Sony has taken over I have had to do this crap about 5 times now - most of it in the last 12 months. And what the hell is up with adding qestions and re-setting passwords without telling the user?!?!?!? And I am sorry but one of the big "no-no's" in web design is to have un-needed steps for log-ins. Asking for user name/pass works fine for most forums. However the webteam - those who do the scripting anyway - seem to not quite have it down. This is not a freaking bank account here guys - I am logging into a forum and I do not need, nor want to, be forced to answer questions about middle names of third cousins on my great gradfather's mother's sister's side of the family. Nor do I find it helpful to do all this and than get told I have answered the questions wrong "x" amount of times so I need to email myself. (Sort of like this story here - A guy goes into a bank to get account info. The teller tells him that his name is not on the account so he can not get any account ifo, but he is more than welcome to close the account. 100% True - this was about 2 months ago this happened to someone I know)

So...waiting here for public reasoning to this maddness.

Filmy? I hear your pain .. I hear yah!

"So...waiting here for public reasoning to this maddness. " . . er . . . you may be waiting for a long, long time.

Get outside, breathe the fresh air, scream and yell "I can't take it any more!" . . . might not get you the answer to this one, but it WILL reduce your BP! And your BP is more important than getting an answer, that even IF you knew, wouldn't bring back the "good feelings".

I.T.? I.T. stinks! I.T. is a loathsome suppurating carbuncle on the face of society. Been reading your post about QT - ugghhh.... nasty nasty business! It has always been my worry, since I decided that I would never ever again have my edit PC connected to the INTERNET, that those lumps of s/w that "needed" to be connected to the "Mother Alien", while they spun their complex way through my hard discs, once recognising that they couldn't reach out and touch tentacles, that nasties would happen on my PC. - Thankfully SONY gives me the option to floppy disc registrations. QT? Dunno . . ..

Ah yah gotta luv it! - NOW we aint got a choice . ..

I hear your pain!

Grazie

Well I can see why access to this place needs to be fairly secure as it gives you access to more than just the forum, things like all your serial numbers.
Still based on what you experience has been they've obviously not tested this thing very thoroughly.
I'll give even money odds that we'll never hear a beep from ForumAdmin about this either.
You could try a formal tech support request but....
Bob.

They barely show here at all, as it is.

when you had to "recapture" your name a few months ago you didn't have to fill out that question form? I did. Maybe you fell through a digital crack or something...

Not at all - and if I did it for sure wasn't a question about a younger sibling.

I guess I must be one of the few here to have never had any kind of problem with logging in to this site.. and the transition from the old to the new one was utterly painless.

In view of the fact that my account has access to every serial number for every Sony/Vegas product I have purchased I want this thing to be as secure as it is.

I've had to reinput the logins to both this forum and DMN several times in the last 3-4 months, on three machines in two offices.

This makes me think that it's a Windows problem. I'm using XPSP1 on all machines. Could be related to one of the many Windows updates.

Since it happens on at least one other forum also, I don't think it's specific to this Vegas Forum.

As far as losing cookie settings or the like - sure. But what I was saying is that the password changed plus, in order to get into my account, I was asked the bogus sibling question that I never asked to be asked. This has nothing to do with my computer.

And being a Monty Python fan, when I was doing this I kept thinking I was going to be asked what the wind velocity of a sparrow was at some point.
