Just tried logging out to see if logging in would reset the time to be correct. I can't seem to log out! We need to be able to set the GMT offset in our preferences. The clock is definitely 2 hours off now.
Seems much faster. I think it was sharing a computer with something that periodically got bogged down (perhaps the main Sofo server?). This seems much more like other forums. Thanks, Sony!
LOL - It's ALWAYS been one hour off, now it's still one hour off, but the other way
It used to be correct for me. I guess the old server was running US Central time and the new server is now on US Pacific time. I guess you're on mountain time?
Only Arizona doesn't go on Daylight Savings Time. All other states (including Utah, where I am) do participate in daylight savings.
Now, there are OTHER weird things about Utah, which we can go into, but probably not here... ;-)
Frenchy
p.s. - There are far more GREAT things about Utah than weird, but it's so much more fun to poke a little fun at oneself, than to take things to seriously.
I would think that the reason that Arizona doesn't go on Daylight Savings Time is that it is SO hot there during the summer that they have no interest in keeping the sun up any longer than necessary.
On www.time.gov they have a really good article on why we use DST. I belive it's all because of those effiicient Germans durring WW1. I forget now. :)
but, the forum isn't any faster for me. It still takes a little time to load up, especialy multiple pposts/threads at one. I should send in a complaint.
We're still in Madison. Thanks for thinking of us though. Sony has a relationship with a large ISP that was able to offer us a much more robust hosting environment. Thus the move to Pacific Time. I'm glad to hear it's faster for most people, but a little disheartened to hear that there's still a 28.8 modem in existence.
Speaking of goofy time zones, visit Indiana some time. They choose to have or not have daylight savings time on a county by county basis. So depending on the time of year, you might be an hour off from the county next door. A company I worked for had an office right on a county border, and I had a -55 minute drive from the hotel to the office. It was sweet, but the drive back sucked.
I moved across the county line which also meant going to Verizon from Bell South. With Bell South, same PC, modem and ISP I never got less than 48,800 and usually got 53,333. With Verizon the best I ever get is 31,200 and often it's 28,800.
I called Verizon on this and was told to forget anything more than 31,200 and be happy when I get that and that they are not in the business of providing high data rates on analog lines. All they guarantee is a workable phone. However if I wanted to upgrade to a data line or DSL that of course be a different story. I then mentioned that I also had static on my phone, they sent a tech free of charge for that who replaced the junction box that didn't even have a jack to test the line with. He said this area is the oldest area in the county and the trunk line is doubled up and needs to be replaced so don't expect much.
Show of hands... how many think since Verizon is saving money by not updating the lines in my area that we in this area should expect to pay less than full price if we ask this monopoly to do so?
I of course realize I can pay for other means to connect so no need to point that out thanks. The point is that the standard fee does not correlate to the individual's service.
I don't have a 28.8 modem, i have a 28.8 max connection speed (normaly 26.4). I've got a 56k one. I live in the middle of nowhere. I'm surrounded by trees. Deer. Bugs. Bugs. lots of bugs. A 100 foot mud driveway. :) I can't get DSL, no cable, no cable modem, no ISDN. I only get 1 TV station (and have lots of DVD's) :( I could get stalite internet, but that's too much for me.
That doesn't stop me from downloading large files! I've downloaded for 2 days/nights straight before! :)
I do notice a forum speed up at work though. I don't connect fast their eigther: to much electronic interfierence (TV transmitter). :)
Could Sony send me a satalite connection for free? You know, as a loyal Vegas customer/forum user? :)
HappyFriar - LOL - I've got a 56k modem to go with my 26.4 k squirrel-powered corroded copper connection as well. I also live in the middle of trees, deer, moose, etc. (not too many bugs, thankfully - only a few deerflies in the peak of summer). I do have 7 months of winter (deep into it since Halloween), however, and I'm a half mile (pavement, fortunately) from the nearest county/state road, which means my my own snow removal efforts (fortunately, there is a local guy who takes care of most of it for all the residents, for $$ of course). I only have to do the last 100 yards or so, depending on the storm. I'm 12+ miles from the nearest central office, so no DSL, no cable, no cable modem, no ISDN either. I don't even have natural gas (we use propane) We DO have Dish Network for entertainment, but, like you, cannot economically justify a high-speed sat. internet connection either ($100 +/- per month, min). I D/L stuff (slooooooowly), as well, but fortunately, I also have a T3 at work, and burn to cd to take home. These forums aren't too bandwidth intensive, but I also have noticed the ramp up in speed recently.
Can I get in a freebie satellite, as well?
mjhig - I'm with you all the way. If only we could DO something about it...
I live in a very tiny hick town with terrible telephone service. However, since it is such a tiny town there are very few folks with cable modems. This means i have very little competition for the bits and have been getting about 1,400Kbps connection to this website all along anyway. It doesn't seem any faster to me today, but that's because it's been pretty fast for me all along.
On the other hand, i've got a really spiffy 100,000Kbps connection to my own website. ;) It's pretty amazing downloading a 20MB video from vegasusers.com in less than 2 seconds!
