Frame size

I have Movie Studio 8 and I know I asked this before but I am still having prablems.

I take a video with my JVC Camcorder.
I have my video size set to 720x480.

My Prject size is set to 720x480 as well in Movie Studio 8.

I open my video in the timeline and I need to have a JPG the same size go over the whole video frame.

So I make my JPG 655x480 but it does not cover the video.

what would be a good size to make my JPG so it covers the video no more no less?

My practice was to create the image at 655 x 480 to get correct aspects for graphics and then convert to 720 x 480 before bringing into project.

A "good" size would be the "right" size. ;-)

What you need to realize is that SD video does not use square pixels but images do. You need to compensate for this. It's simple Math. (... you were paying attention in Math class weren't you? lol) Look at the Pixel Aspect Ratio (PAR) of your video and multiply the width by this amount and use that as the width of your image.

For example: if you have NTSC DV Widescreen footage, your video is 720x480 with a PAR of 1.2121. If you multiply 720 by 1.2121 you get 872.712. Since you can't have a fractional pixel, you must round up to 873 and make your image 873x480 and it will match your video exactly.

BTW, 655x480 is for NTSC DV 4:3 which has a PAR of 0.9091 and 720 x 0.9091 = 654.552 which rounds up to 655x480. The calculations are similar for PAL video if you are in a PAL country.

Where have I seen that before..... hmmm..... oh, yes....

But then again, tb9 doesn't mention which PAR is being used in the current project.

The best option is to create it at 720 x 480 using photo/graphic software that is aspect aware. Give it the correct aspect for creating and then save as 720 x 480.

any other way and Vegas has to either discard pixels or create them.

Then again, so does the photo/graphic software when it saves such an image. There's no way around.

It depends upon the software, in the case of photoshop, it keeps the resolution but allows you to preview and create at the corrected aspect ratio. So if you draw a circle, it looks like a circle when you create your final video. Your photo is saved at the selected resolution.
