Frames dropped after edit

I have captured video in DV format using VideoFactory 2.0 and it looks great. I then edited pieces out of the video and created an output video file also of DV format. When I viewed my edited file I noticed that it seemed like every other frame was missing, it was playing at the correct speed but motion has a very jerky look to it. What could possibly be causing that problem? (Below is my system information)

Earlier I had made a highly-edited video that I put to DVD then noticed on playback that certain portions had the exact same problem. VideoFactory 2.0 is a great editing tool, but I ALWAYS find some sort of surprise after I perform some time consuming task with it. As far as I'm concerned, there's no reason why video quality should suffer when going from VideoFactory captured DV to VideoFactory DV and I'm really getting tired of having to deal with these surprises. Damn it, I just want it to work!

Thanks

The first thing that pops in my mind is that you have the field order messed up. This will cause jerky looking motion (especially pans). Make sure the field order is set to "lower field first".

However, there are plenty of other things that could cause jerky motion. Is it possible to post a short 5-10 second clip illustrating the problem?

Hi,

Unfortunately for me my field order is already set to "Lower field first". I don't think I could post an example because DV files are so massive that even 1 second of video would take most people a day to download! Here's my settings in Make Movie hopefully someone can tell me that could be wrong:

INITIAL MAKE MOVIE DIALOG BOX:
Description : Audio: 48 KHz, 16-bit, Stereo. PCM (uncompressed).
Video: 29.97 fps, 720x480, Lower field first.
Pixel Aspect Ratio: .909. OpenDML compatible.
NTSC DV video files compatible with Sonic Foundry Video Capture.
[ ] Render Loop Region only (unchecked and disabled)
[ ] Stretch video to fill output frame (unchecked)
[ ] Fast Video Resizing (unchecked)

ADVANCED RENDER DIALOG:
[ ] Render Loop Region only (unchecked and disabled)
[X] Save project markets in media file (checked)
[ ] Stretch video to fill output frame size (do not letterbox)

CUSTOM SETTINGS: PROJECT
Video Rendering Quality: Best (Isn't this irrelevant for DV files?)
Motion Blur Type: None
Exposure Time (seconds) 0.1000 - (Unchangable setting)

CUSTOM SETTINGS: VIDEO
NTSC DV (720x480) - (Unchangable setting)
Frame Rate: 29.90 (NTSC) - (Unchangable setting)
Field Order: Lower Field First
Pixel Aspect Ratio: 0.909 - (Unchangable setting)
Video Format (NTSC DV)
Quality - (Unchangable setting)

Checked Items:
[x] Interleave every (seconds) 0.250
[x] Create an OpenDML (AVI version 2.0) compatible file
(Other options unchecked)

FYI: I installed XP Home's SP-1, DirectX 9.0b, and all the other available downloads on Microsoft's site (looks like I have a new video driver too) but I am still seeing this problem.

Just to check that its not a field order problem, try rendering a small section with upper field first. (I know DV is lower field first but its worth a try) You might also try rendering a small section as progressive scan. If its not a filed order problem, all of these renders should have the same skipping problem. If the skipping goes away, it was a filed order problem. It’s worth a shot.
