"free" music

Spot|DSE wrote on 9/22/2004, 10:45 PM
Now that the Museum of the American Indian has had its grand opening, I'm free to release two pieces recorded for the American Indian Veterans that opened part of the museum this evening.
This is a rendition of America the Beautiful on a cane flute made by Hawk Littlejohn, a Native veteran flutemaker.
Anyway, it's part of the museum display, but of course the song is public domain. I'd like people to be able to use it if they'd like to.
I'm pretty proud to be a very small part of the museum, both as a musician and video editor/videographer. It's a great thing that we finally have a beautiful facility and recognition of our culture and it's contributions.
Consider this my small contribution to the patriotic sense in America right now. Royalty-free, this is yours to do with what you want.

America the Enjoy.

wow, Spot, that is very generous of you, thank you...

Although 99% of what I do in the video world is purely on a hobby basis, I would love to honour your generosity and make a video set to your music and of course credit you for it.

Once again, thank you!

Paul.

Ps. is there a website available for museum?

Listened to it. Very nice, never image "America the Beautiful" on a cane flute. I was looking for you on the news about the grand opening of the Museum of the American Indian. Did you contribute any of your flutes?

thanks for sharing this Douglas.

- I'd love to hear a few background things like where and how recorded, post production etc ...

The museum URL is http://www.nmai.si.edu
I was invited to attend as an observer but not performer. Given some things going on in the VASST release schedules, the Government Expo, and a few other happenings...I did not attend. Event was last night, I'll be in Roanoke VA tomorrow, then to Sacramento, then back east to DC for the DMDC/Government Expo next week. Hope to see some of you there.

Ain't much to tell on this one, Peter.
Cane flute, recorded with Audio Technica 4033 mike feeding a John Hardy M1, into an M-Audio Layla, recorded at 24/48
Recorded into Vegas (of course!) but was Vegas 3, and edited/mastered in Vegas 4, using WAVES verb and compressors.
There's actually no editing or pitch controlling in this piece. I wanted it raw. The flute is a very unique instrument with a unique frequency range and response. I could have fine tuned it all, but then it loses it's raw power. There is one timing issue I wish I'd changed back then...But only if wishes were fishes that beggars might eat.

Question Spot,
Why did you record in vegas 3 and edit in vegas 4. I know you have th other tools from sony, and also vegas 5. Is there a benefit to usubg your workflow for that type of project?
Spot|DSE wrote on 9/23/2004, 8:48 AM
No. This was recorded while Version 4 was in Beta. I didn't want to record this in Beta and then find myself having to revert back to Version 3. The video project this accompanies was started almost 3 years ago.
So, recorded in 3, saved as one kind of .veg in 3, and then edited in 4, and (thankfully) the beta for 4 ran great. But...when you're recording multiple passes, you wanna know for sure that the tracks are there, lined up, etc. It just happened to work out that 4's beta was stable and ready to roll

Spot,
Excellent piece. This will go well behind a slide show of our millitary serving in Iraq. Thanks much for your generosity.
Aloha,

Yeah Thanks Spot,
Hey have you ever performed with R. Carlos Nakai?( I think I spelled his name right?)
I used to listen to him on Musical Starstreams years back.
Spot|DSE wrote on 9/23/2004, 4:55 PM
Yes, I've performed many times with R. Carlos. Good player....Starstreams? Geez! that was a while back. They sorta "Put me on the map" many, many years back.

Yup,
Wow,
You had stuff on there too? I gotta see if I got you on some of my tapes.

I have probably 120 cassette tapes dating way back when Forest was Frank Forest, used to tape it every sunday night. still like to listen to them when working. seems like their more into the techno style now, ok ,but I prefered the diverstiy of the old program.
I remember a song that was done by I believe a Native American, mostly drum beat from what I remember but it had a story of an old man telling a story of a ghost/spirit woman who comes to him one night. Ive been slowly going thru my tapes to see if I can find it.
Ring any bells to you?

Non Linears got me so spoiled now , seems like such a pain to scan thru analog tape : )

Thanks, I have combined the music with video and stills from a trip to The Black Hills in South Dakota, (Badlands, Rushmore, Bison, Sidney Whitesell's sons dancing, etc.) It will be a great reminder of one of the most beautiful areas of the country.

Also, thanks for all your help on the forums. I don't post much, but do read and try everything I can. It is an education.
