Free Sound Effects Resource

This site may have been brought up before, but I didn't see anything in search.

I saw an article about the site in Post magazine. It's a free sound effects library that contains over 30,000 files uploaded by regular folks (the site just started up in the last couple of months). You can upload your own sounds so others can use it for free as well.

It has a beautifully simple interface. Much better than Sounddogs.

I'd imagine the fee-based sites have been fearing something like this would eventually come along.

Aaaahh... had to figure this was going to happen. Just when you get used to a resource, they know that and begin to charge. Actually I don't have a problem with charging for sound effects, it's just annoying when someone acts like they have the greatest, novel idea to give away something for free when they probably knew that they would charge once people got used to their site.

I like to go to this place and a lot of their stuff just requires you to give credit where credit is due.

I've mentioned this a few years back but worth mentioning again.
If you make it to NAB walk around and pickup any free CD of sound FX. I've used one I picked up a few year back several times. It is clearly labelled that the content is free to use for anything. Of course not all of them are like this, many are just samplers that are not free to use so maybe read the fine print before you put it in your bag.

The interface may be more simple, but the sound effects are certainly not better than those to be found on Sounddogs. It isn't free, it costs a minimum of $29 per month.

I spent about a hour browsing the site and listening to the sound effects. Nothing to brag about here, not from what I heard.

The old adage is proven once more, "You get what you pay for."

Hey - jay - not sure if you were referring to mine or the initial old post, but I thought I'd just note that I never said they were good sounds, just free.

you are correct, you certainly do get what you pay for :).

There's never a free lunch. Remember that!

You can get 5 free a month. I downloaded 5 sounds that I needed. That is better than nothing. Plus for what I do the sounds are fine. I am not doing work for broadcast TV. Lecture DVDs, weddings, home film and video is about it. I needed sounds of a car on a gravel road. I downloaded 2 wav files, blended them together and it sounds perfect. Not bad at all.

I used soundsnap.com for all of my needs in Dream House. Even if they're chaging, I'll use them again for my next feature. It's a great site, and all the time I was using it, I was thinking, "I can't believe this is free..."

Geez, Harold, you're right... I didn't even notice that you get 5 free a month. That's fair enough. And if I use more, don't mind paying then.
