I read here that you are entitled to a free upgrade only if you bought VMS8 very recently: less than 30 days before the release of VMS9.

How did you get Vegas 8 without a serial number? *All* legitimate sales come with a serial number. There are no exceptions.

When you launch VMS, the splash screen should show the serial number. You should have entered the serial number as part of the installation process

Where/how did you buy it?

Perhaps he means that he got a serial for v8 but not one for v9 to enable him to install that version.

I had the same thing. I was told that I could get a free upgrade to v9 but I was never given a serial number for v9. You'll need to contact Sony to make sure you meet the upgrade window (30 day) requirement and they'll help you obtain the correct serial number. Unfortunately, my purchase was at around 40 days and they wouldn't budge.

You might start with SCS Customer Support

Was it in a box? If so, it should have included a paper with the serial number on it. If the box was opened prior to you purchasing it, the SN paper may have come out.

Did it ask you for the serial number when you installed VMS? What does the splash screen say?

yeah it came with the serial for vms8 just not for the upgrade. that serial does not work in the vms9 registering

i'll try contacting through customer service

Version 9 will have it's own serial number that Sony gives you when they give you the free upgrade.
