Freeze frame at cursor behavior

tpolakov wrote on 3/28/2021, 7:29 AM

Hi all,

I am trying to end a video clip with the last frame frozen. So I set my cursor before the last frame and select "Freeze frame at cursor" from the event's hamburger menu. It adds a 5 second clip, but it's actually not a single frame, but the trimmed out portion of the clip.

I found that I have to go one frame back - that is, to set the cursor before the second last frame of the trimmed clip for the freeze frame to work as expected. This also adds a one frame clip after the frozen frame (I guess the original last frame of the clip) - which I have to delete afterwards.

Does this happen to you as well? Is it expected behavior? If so, why?

I am attaching a screenshot with the cursor when it works and when it does not.

This one adds video: This one adds the frozen frame:

This is Vegas Movie studio 17.

Thanks

@tpolakov I can repro this. Freeze frame at cursor works correctly in Vegas Pro 18 but the mechanism is different to MSP17.
I wouldn't have thought that this was expected behaviour.

@VEGASDerek Is this a known issue?

Because @tpolakov used this in VMS17, he has to have VMS17 Platinum.
In that version it works with me as intended and expected.

I am on Platinum. Another interesting tidbit - if I do not trim the clip beforehand, creating the freezeframe on the last frame adds the beginning of the clip.

Just disable "enable looping events by default" in editing preferences before putting an event on the timeline.

This works OK if the event has not been trimmed before. However, trimmed events still behave the same - that is, the trimmed out portion plays instead of the frozen frame.

To overcom that behaviour you have first to rightclick that trimmed event and choose "Create Subclip"

When you make first a subclip of the trimmed event then the subclip behaves like a untrimmed event. Also there is no need than to use the freeze frame button, just extend the event by stretching, automatically freeze frames of the last frame are generated.

Thanks this works. Still I wonder why do I need to create a subclip and why it works properly just by moving another frame back in the original scenario.

The Freeze Frame feature in VEGAS Pro uses velocity envelopes. Those envelopes are not available in Movie Studio, and as a result a different solution was created.

Thank you - although I would still consider this a bug. If there are reasons the freeze frame does not work on the last frame of a trimmed video, then it should not insert a video there, rather it should not allow the function.
If there are no reasons for the limitation, it should work on the last frame as well.
