Freezing up during rendering why?

This is getting frustrating! Constantly when I render a project I step away then return and my computer is frozen up. This should not be the case. I run a Pent 4 1.8 ghz and 512mb DDR ram. However lately my computer seems to be slower while previewing video in a project. Then while rendering one project about 70% into it a warning pop up said low on virtual memory I said ok then it rendered fine.
Someone please help.

Thank you,
Randini

From what you describe it could be a bunch of things.

A P4 1.8 Ghz PC isn't the issue. Heck even my PII 266 Mhz can handle a render job (just slow).

You mention Virtual Mem problems and the fact that the system is slower whil previewing. You could be having some resourse issues. Clearing temp files, defrag, blah blah blah.....checking to make sure what other apps are running (what OS are you using?)

Check to make sure drivers are good - you know, all the normal stuff that zap resources.

But most of all - look at your system on over heating. Where is the box located (assuming it is a desktop)? Is it getting enough ventilation?

How big is the file you are rendering? Does it do it only on a job that takes 5 hours to render, or does it do it on a 10 minute job?

When it freezes up...what are your next steps? Do you just cold boot? Do you run some diagnostics afterwards (Certain versions of Windows really don't like to be shut down improperly).

How is your virtual memory set up? Where is it being stored...as in do you have multiple HDs and if so - which one is your VM set up to run on? Maybe you can raise the memory level that windows uses for VM (that could help)...but I think it may be a heating (or over heating) issue.

A little more information and we can track this puppy down for ya.

Thank you Kameron,
Great suggestions and I considered them and while investigating I stumbled across the problem! Add a solution to the list....in Vegas 4.0 under options/pref/video my dynamic RAM was maxed out at 383mb (I forgot I changed this last week) and this was consuming my RAM resources. I moved it to 25mb and now im smoothe as Bill Gates custom Pentium in his home.
