Freezing while rendering issue & query how to reduce crashing

Chris-Bridgwood wrote on 7/25/2021, 6:02 AM

Using Movie Studio 16.0 Platinum

While rendering my project freezes at 29% repeatedly. The source material is from stored location in external hard drive, obtained from Go Pro Hero 3, Go Pro 8, I phone 7 including files forwarded to I phone 7 from other I phones. I am a text book novice, I have successfully posted video's without changing methods knowingly.

Also what can I do about crashing while editing?

THANK YOU

Vegas Pro (and therefore VMS) does not cope very well for many with Variable Frame Rate (VFR) from iPhones and Samsung phones amongst others. Many have experienced this - if you do a forum search re 'variable frame rate', there'll be a long history of this. The most common recommendation over the years is to transcode VFR to Constant Frame Rate (CFR) via a utility such as the free HandBrake amongst others and then import the CFR transcode into Vegas Pro.

This of course may not be the problem, but if you did the VFR to CFR conversion and updated it on the timeline, then that would either eliminate or exclude that as the cause of the problem.

@Chris-Bridgwood Is it always 29% pretty exactly? If so you can probably tell from the preview window where about it is on your timeline. What is on the timeline at that point and are any FX being applied?

@Chris-Bridgwood  ... Just a suggestion that I made a couple of days ago re a similar issue occurring on Vegas Pro:

There is a possibility that one of the video events is corrupted media. A good way to check this is to go to Vegas Pro's Explorer window and look at the video media in 'Thumbnails' view. All the thumbnails should have a sample image of the recorded scene, but a corrupted video event may show as an icon of some sort rather than as a sample image.

Checking this will either help identify the cause of the problem or rule it out as the cause. Many years ago, I had a rendering problem which always stalled at the same %, and a corrupted video event turned out to be the cause. Removing it solved the problem at the time.

So, yesterday I was able to complete one rendering of unfinished approximately 20 minute video (same project having trouble with, mostly only adding TILES & TEXT from MEDIA GENERATORS), then after repeated attempt at rendering, froze at 29% (% is not always exact, varies somewhat, eg. 33%). Currently same project is rendering at 43% & still working, looks like this one will render. As I am increasing the size of a project is when I feel the crashing while editing increases. I am saving project more often then before now while editing in an attempt to reduce loss. It appears to be freezing rendering at different times & media of timeline, no pattern acknowledged yet.

Thank you for the tips/suggestions so far.

I am very much appreciating this forum & your assistance!

Freezing while rendering appears to be resolved. I expanded the timeline further than previously at the frozen point on the preview window. I found small spaces in the time line between clips & closed the gaps. Does now render.

Make sure you have Quantize to frames ENABLED.
