future-proof dvd format burning & possible conversion

Hi,
this is not 100% DVD Architect, but could be relevant anyhow (?).
I currently use a Pioneer-105 to burn -R/-RW DVD:s.
If there would be a winner in the format war +/-, would it be possible to easily convert an existing -R recordeer DVD to +R, (or the other way around)?
Would I need to re-author and burn, or can I somehow just copy the existing content and re-burn?
Is the content valid regardless of the media/method of burning? Is only the media and burning method different between -R/+R?
As you might see from the post I'm not an experienced ripper :).
But it would be nice to know how much of the soure material I would have to keep/backup/store to be able to re-burn a DVD without going through a complete editing process.

I'm grateful for any help on the subject. Thanx.

I would think that since you can burn the VIDEO_TS & AUDIO_TS folders using Nero you'd be able to just copy them from one disc format to another. If I had one of those Sony's I'd give it a shot but right now I only have a Pioneer A03 so can only burn -R/-RWs.

I guess that if it's that easy, it won't be any problem to convert to another format, if ever needed. Depending on the number of discs, of course :)

Btw, anyone tried it for real?

Thanx.

I agree - it's how the sectors and directories are stored on the disc that varies, not the DVD structure. Otherwise we would have lots more compatibility issues than we do now.

I've taken the same directories and copied them to both a +/- disc on my Sony DRU500a, and both look the same and work fine. They also match when doing a plain copy back to the hard drive.

My comments on converting a drive from +/- -- it depends on whether they can fit the code into the amount of space available in flash memory on the writer. I would expect the Sony to have a large flash, since it supports both formats. But I don't have a clue whether the code for one is larger than the other. I haven't read anything that would indicate to me that the physical parts of the drive are any different.

I also have the Sony DRU500 and have consistently burned the same file to a -DVD and a +DVD without any problems.
