If you set the project properties to HDV 60i 1080 in Vegas and then run Gearshift, then change the project properties to NTSC 60i widescreen, then preview the proxies via 1394 on a widescreen monitor, you will get a preview that shows at full resolution even if the preview is set lower except on portions of the video that require rendering. This is the way it should be.
If however, you set the project properties to NTSC 60i widescreen and then run Gearshift to generate the NTSC 60i widescreen proxies, then preview the proxies via 1394 on a widescreen monitor, you will get a preview that for some unknown reason (at least unknown to me) previews at the preview resolution even on the parts that shouldn't require rendering. This is not the way it should be.
I work with a 1394 and external widescreen monitor previewing setup. Normally when working with this setup, I set the preview resolution at "good auto". My editing style is the typical old fashioned style of mostly straight cuts with an odd crossfade here and there. With the preview set to "good" I get full resolution everywhere but the crossfades and title animations. This way I get a nice clean image most of the time, and the timing is still accurate on the crossfades. Since the crossfades are only occasional, most of the time I'm previewing at full resolution and my P4 3.06 CPU hums along with no strain whatsoever.
This works well with Gearshift proxies as well as long as I remember to set the project properties to HDV resolution before I run Gearshift to generate the proxies. If I accidently have the project properties set to NTSC resolution and then start the proxy render, the generated proxies will preview at the preview resolution the whole time, not just during transitions.
I just accidentally rendered a couple of directories of HDV footage to proxies with the project properties set to SD instead of HDV. After a good six or seven hours of rendering, what I have is a couple of directories full of proxies that don't preview properly. AAHHH!
I propose that a Gearshift be modified to always reset the project properties to HDV resolution before it renders the proxies so that this isn't an issue. After it renders the proxies it should reset the project properties back to the original settings.
My relationship with Gearshift is a little like the one my wife has with me. She's always suggesting ways that I could improve, but she wouldn't do it if she didn't love me so much. That's kind of how I feel about Gearshift. I really love the program. If I didn't , the few things left that need improvement wouldn't bug me so much ;)
