getting that bullet slicing through the air look

musman wrote on 8/10/2004, 4:01 AM
I know, it's overdone. I promise no one's going to be dodging it in slow motion like in the Matrix and countless other rip offs.
All I want to to create a bullet cutting through the air. Is this possible in Vegas? I just looked through the scripts on the VAAST site as I thought I saw something there a while ago, but I didn't find anything.
Any thoughts? Thanks!

Hmm....there was a bullet dodge thing in there, made from generated media and a height map...I'm on a dialup that charges by the minute, so I'll leave it to others to look. If you still can't find it, I'll find a backup and reload it. It's one I did, had a zip file attached for the map. However, you could create this just as easily or more easily with the bezier mask and a white generated media.
Edit: somehow the old map files are misplaced on the site. I've probably accidentally deleted them. HOwever, I've uploaded a new file using a bezier mask. It's not very good because I put it together in a few seconds. Deconstruct it to see how to make this effect, create more active masking to make the flow more 'live.'

Spot, just wanted to say thanks for taking the time and the expense to post that script. I think it looks great, but even after looking at it for a while I still have virtually no idea how you did it. I'll keep at it and will try to work on that flow as you mentioned.
Must be crazy to be on the road that much. But it sure would be great to have y'all come to the 'ham (Birmingham) here in the deep south some day.

Hey, I live about 45min from b'ham. :)

No kidding. Where? Up until 3 weeks ago I thought I was probably the lone Vegas user in these parts. Now that makes 3 other Vegas people around town. Cool!

About 45min down I20, in the Anniston area.

Track 1 is bullet, made from noise generator, bezier mask in Pan/Crop tool to create cut out section
Track 2 is solid white generated media. Bezier mask tool used to cut out the 'path' of bullet 'displaced air.' Open Pan/Crop and click on the Mask keyframe line to see the cutout.
Track 2 is displacement map in composting modes. Look at the compositing mode to see how the displacement map is generated.
Tracks 1 and 2 are both moved using the track motion tools.
Track 3 is just a bitmap found in the Windows folder.
HTH.
p.s. you are quite welcome. I showed that piece in Melbourne today.

That is a cool trick, Spot. With a bit of patience and rotoscoping, it could easily be used to create the Predator effect, or a cool ghost. I'm going to give that a try.

Spot:

I was looking for the V4 version of this veggie - is it still on the VASST site, and what is it called?

Thanks
