GH5 6K Hevc .mp4 files not viewable in VP14/15

Former user wrote on 9/6/2017, 6:18 PM

Perhaps its already been mentioned, anyway the files open but as the title says ...

This may be of interest to some with the GH5 'open gate' hevc files been made available at the end of the month with the new firmware. If the hevc files are of similar makeup then probably they won't be enabled by VP15 either.

Vegas is limited to 4096x4096 video.

Sounds like this limit has to be raised up.

Former user wrote on 9/6/2017, 7:31 PM

Well GJeffrey, that explains it, thanks.

astar wrote on 9/6/2017, 11:03 PM

Vegas will scale down resolutions above 4096. There is very little need for resolutions above 4096 professionally. Mainly I think the extra resolution allows for image stabilization and still end up with a full 4K resolution, or clearer image/less noise due to scale down. Even youtube jumps from 4K to 8K, skipping the resolutions in between.

You can download RED footage at various levels up to 8K and test this for yourself.

But I agree that Vegas is well over due for a 16Kx16K engine upgrade. The NLE should not be the limiting factor.

I downloaded a GH5-6K sample and nither VLC or FFplay will playback at even a low frame rate. My guess is there just needs to be a slight update to Vegas codec to adjust for what the GH5 is doing.

Former user wrote on 9/7/2017, 3:28 AM

I have the GH5 astar, thanks for your input. I mostly shoot 4K and render to FHD, with the benefits from this, good quality FHD and cropping and panning options. I can see some circumstances where the extra "headroom" that 6K in dimensions gives would be very useful for extra cropping and panning capability. Image stabilisation is the 2nd. big benefit I would appreciate having it for. Mercalli, for example, will have more real estate to work with.

6K frame grabs from VP rather than in camera would also be a big benefit.

Other users would use the 6K perhaps for different benefits for their workflow, different to mine. So all in all it would be nice to have support for this in VP sometime.

Kinvermark wrote on 9/8/2017, 9:43 PM

I anticipate using those files in a similar way (stabilization, pan/crop reframing, zooming & motion).

Have you logged this as a "feature request"? I can't find the link otherwise I would do it.

Former user wrote on 9/9/2017, 3:18 AM

I've no idea how to go about that Kinvermark, good idea though.

NickHope wrote on 9/17/2017, 9:19 AM

Where to download a GH5 6k sample? I could only find the "download > original" of this, which is 8 months old, and not really the same thing.

Former user wrote on 9/17/2017, 6:02 PM

Well Nick, whats the point, if GJeffrey is right it simply won't work in Vegas at the moment.

Kinvermark wrote on 9/17/2017, 6:29 PM

That's not quite how I understand this, so some footage is needed to test. See astar's post about scaling. For example, I put photos on the timeline all the time that are more than 4096 pixels wide.

Former user wrote on 9/17/2017, 8:33 PM

Perhaps you should look at the posts topic, which I am referring to in my comment to Nick, GH5 hevc VIDEO files.

This is the topic I started, but by all means you and Astar can drop photos onto the timeline to your hearts content and discuss same, but thats not of interest to me, and its not why I opened this topic.

At the moment if GJeffrey is correct this CANNOT be done with the GH5 hevc media, thus my comment ADDRESSED to Nick, no doubt he can speak for himself Kinvermark.

Kinvermark wrote on 9/17/2017, 10:17 PM

Not sure why you are getting your back up, I am just seeking clarification because I am also interested in YOUR post topic and would like to join the discussion of YOUR post topic. This is a public forum isn't it ? If you wish to have a private discussion, then there are other ways to do that.

So, MY question is: Is it really true that footage over 4096 x 4096 won't open in Vegas?

(If it's not true, then a workaround for the GH5 footage might be to transcode to another video format or image sequence.)

NickHope wrote on 9/17/2017, 10:22 PM

Vegas Pro project and output resolution is limited to 4096x4096, but media larger than that can be opened and will scale down.

Aside from the 5184x3456 sample linked in my previous comment, I was sent another GH5 4992x3744 HEVC file. I'm not sure of the settings used to create it. Both files open in VP15 build 177 but decode incorrectly:

It's reasonable to assume that GH5 6K HEVC files from the forthcoming firmware update will suffer similar problems, so I'll alert Magix to these 2 samples so they can take a look at them.

Thank you .

set wrote on 9/17/2017, 10:29 PM

I grabbed this 8K video for experiment purpose

and I can still put it on my timeline...

If I check 'Yes' with the question 'Do you want to set your project video settings to match this media?', VP will maximize the resolution to square 4096

"Both files open in VP15 build 177 but decode incorrectly:"

Thats my experience so far. Set, I assume your sample is NOT GH5 hevc material?

The reason I created this post was to highlight the GH5 media issue, its important to stay focussed on that issue, I believe if we are to have any chance of Magix taking note. It took long enough, and a paid upgrade before we got the 422 10 bit, hopefully we wont have to wait for ver. 16 for this issue.

By all means discuss the price of eggs in Sweden, but thats not what I raised here.

set wrote on 9/18/2017, 6:06 AM

Yes, it is MP4 from youtube, not GH5 HEVC.

As for GH5 6K sample, I love to try it too if I able to find the sample. Developers are also appreciate it if they can obtain the sample.

GH5 has successfully able to read 4K 10-bit avc 422 format, but seems not yet capable to read the newer HEVC one.

I guess the samples from this page http://www.eoshd.com/2017/08/panasonic-gh5-review-and-exclusive-first-look-at-version-2-0-firmware/ is not the one problematic?

eh? so that's the correct link?

The question is which one is HEVC? are all of them?

I only test download Bob Horse ALL-I 400 Standard EOSHD54054.MOV and it works...

Also confirm problem exists with the gh5 6k footage Nick Hope linked to. Also confirm that it can successfully be transcoded to prores and brought into Vegas at the original resolution (only as a temporary workaround of course - now that Nick has alerted Magix.) No opinion about Swedish eggs :)

Oops!

"JN_'s Hevc clip from dropbox"

Set, can you remove those? I thought I was uploading 2 of Andrew Reids files from EosHd.

I must have been experimenting with the 6K photo which is hevc and put those 2 there instead of Andrews, thanks.

Thanks Set. Its only coming back to me now.

When I couldn't find any Hevc files to download, at Andrews google drive link, I asked him to make some origional files available, never got an answer. In fairness I'm guessing he may not be allowed to post the originals, NDA, or I simply couldn't find them.

I knew that the GH5 6K photo mode was done in hevc and made some test files myself, left them in the same folder on my PC as some of the Eoshd downloaded files, and forgot about them.

I assumed the 2 files I uploaded to my dropbox earlier today were his, it was a while ago, simply forgot. So they are not much use to the developers because theres no guarantee that the 6K photo hevc mode will be the same as the hevc released at the end of this month, although it might be!

NickHope wrote on 10/5/2017, 5:58 AM

In VP15 build 216, the problem is a little different. GH5 HEVC files now decode with half-length video stream, severe stuttering and green frames.

Could someone please share a "6k" anamorphic sample from the GH5 V2 firmware for the developers to take a look at? Those files should have a resolution of 4992x3744.

petecarney wrote on 10/5/2017, 10:40 AM

The GH5's 6K 'photo mode' records either 4992x3744 in 4:3 ratio or 5184x3456 in 3:2 ratio depending on how you setup your cam to take photo's.  Both of these modes use 200mbps HEVC encoding in either 24p or 30p.  The GH5 also has a 4K UHD HGL (hybrid log gamma) mode that shoots either 24p or 30p HEVC at 72mbps.  The GH5's HGL modes are for playback on HDR displays, though I haven't been able to get it to work on my Sony Bravia 4K HDR display.  It always just looks like a log gamma raw image that needs color correction.

I can upload samples if someone gives me an ftp link.  I don't use dropbox or google or anything I have to sign up for.  Sorry.  Let me know if there is a place to upload to and I'll put up some samples for everyone to test with.

The "6K" HEVC image from the GH5 is truly spectacular and plays back perfectly with MPC_HC and a GTX1050ti card.  The new 10xx gtx cards have a direct hevc decoder from what I understand.  The reason this size format is so valuable is that it allows cropping, motion tracking and stabilization whilst still allowing for full resolution 4K UHD output.

edit.....  I think all these modes are available in 50hz pal frequency as well as 60hz us modes.

Cheers,

Pete
