glass panes effect

I am trying to achieve an effect of glass panes or panels crossing the screen, both horizontally and vertically. A reference is the opening credit sequence from
CSI: Miami. I would appreciate any advice on how to achieve it.

Semi-transparent PNGs that look like glass I guess, and then you composite it and you animate it. Or you shoot real, reflecting, glass with a green screen background.
