Glitch on DVD

TravelJunkie wrote on 7/26/2005, 4:14 AM
I have just completed my first project in VMS since replacing my PC with a newer, faster machine. All went smoothly and I authored a 20 minute video and 10 minute slide show to DVD with DVDAS. The completed DVD plays OK for about 5 minutes, then "freezes" for a couple of seconds, and replays from Chapter 1. If I "fast forward" past the freeze point, the remainder of the video plays OK.

I have repeated the burn process with a variety of different media (DVD+R / DVD+RW / Philips / Memorex / TDK) end every time the completed disc freezes at a single point - BUT the location of the glitch is different in every disc I have burnt.

Any ideas or suggestions gratefully received !!

Does this only happen on your PC or does it also happen on set top players?

What you describe sounds like a bad burn, where the error rate gets too high and the player simply gives up trying to read the DVD. Can you copy the files off of the DVD without problems?

Here's another thing to try - download a copy of CopyToDVD from www.vso-software.com - they have a 30 day fully functional free trial. Use it to do your burn (just use DVDAS to prepare). If the resulting DVD still has the same problem you need to maybe start thinking you have a faulty burner (unusual, but could happen) or there's something else going on with your PC.

Thanks for the quick response, Scott!

The Glitch is evident on both PC and set-top player.

I'll have a try with CopyToDVD and report back later...

Something else to check is whether the DVD will play off the HD. You can download a bit rate checker here and your DVD player may have the option to display the bit rate as well.

... and it was a firmware upgrade for the Philips DVDR1640 burner.

Anyway, many thanks for your help and interest.
