Go Pro 4K Black 4K 30fps tips / discussion

MattAdamson wrote on 12/27/2014, 4:38 AM
All,

I couldn't find any specific threads related to this cameras 4K 30fps mode so thought this would be a good thread to start and keep discussion / tips related to it. I've posted the mediainfo properties of a clip in this mode below for reference.

I've just come back from a Skiing trip with the camera and shot a mix of 4K and 1080 120fps footage. I'm going to create both a 4K and 1080 videos and want to get the best from the 4K version. A few questions

1) Vegas seems to offer options for XAVC and XAVCS if you select match media format in the render settings using the source content MP4 file. Even searching I'm still not clear which you'd use for each scenario. The XAVCS version mentions "Long-GOP" in its description and from http://www.sony.co.uk/pro/article/broadcast-xavc-white-paper-1211 we see this quote "Today, the vast majority of broadcast and reality-TV industry is operating on the MPEG2 HD Long GOP format (50Mbps or 35Mbps) for HDTV production due to its small file size, high picture quality, and economy in computational requirements. From breaking news to reality shows, and prime sports events, the data rate of 35 to 50Mbps is the sweet spot to operate a file based HDTV infrastructure. ".

2) Slightly related to 1 YouTube also offers 4K support and given this what is the best template to use? Should we customize the default templates?

3) Does anyone have experience of stabilisiation plug ins for this 4K mode? There appear to be a vast array of plug ins. I did try Mercalli which with version 4 has support for a 4K output mode. I'm not sure if this is ideal for the camera though however it does reference "Go Pro 4" profile which is a good sign. The output looked reasonably good on some shaky ski footage.

4) Although the 4K mode only supports 30fps which is still very impressive are there any 3rd party products which might interpolate and generate 60fps footage? Even if it takes a long time to render it would be useful to generate smoother output.

Thanks

Matt

Prodad Respeedr ?

I don't know products that will INTERPOLATE to generate 60fps footage, but I plan to up-rate 4k footage from 30 to 60 in a vegas render, simply because I can SEE a smoother delivery out of it. Granted, I do know it is not REALLY 60p, but the look of it is still visually smoother and clearer, to me anyway. And any slo-mo from it does not benefit since it just doubles the frames...

Interesting idea though... maybe like a TWIXTER thing where it actually CREATES full and proper frames for the inbetween ones... does Twixter to that?

Respeedr and Twixtor do create full and proper frames in between source frames. Sometimes perfectly and sometimes not and have some visual artifacts. It is all source material dependent. I have been using Respeedr.

If only doubling, one created frame, you will likely get perfect results in nearly all cases.

thanks all, in relation to 3) using Mercalii. I generated a 4K file from Sony Vegas fine from the Go Pro Clips which uploaded to YouTube also fine here . However when I used the Mercalli export option after attempting to stabalise the video it didn't appear to be recognised by YouTube. HEVC/H265 ( mov ). It states this is the codec to use for 4K as a new feature in Mercalii v4.0. I have raised this with the support team and awaiting an answer. This is the generated MediaInfo from the output file

As i know gopro studio has a free "built in twixtor"
give it a try

#1 Ryzen 5-1600, 16GB DDR4, Nvidia 1660 Super, M2-SSD, Acer freesync monitor

#2 i7-2600, 32GB, Nvidia 1660Ti, SSD for system, M2-SSD for work, 2x4TB hdd, LG 3D monitor +3DTV +3D projectors

Win10 x64, Vegas22 latest

You could take the Mercalli output and run it through Handbrake. Handbrake has the ability to produce files that are recognised by Youtube. Good luck waiting to get any sensible reply out of ProDad about Mercalli.

relaxvideo - yes interesting I just learnt this too http://cheesycam.com/gopro-studio-flux-slow-motion-option/. It seems the flux feature is free in go pro studio and does interpolation. I actually use the clips in Vegas by dragging them directly in and rarely edit in go pro studio but nice they offer this for free.

geebax - thanks yes handbrake may help as a last resort. Although I really dislike putting the video through so many encoders e.g. go pro -> vegas -> mercalii -> handbrake. I presume the quality suffers a little at each re encoding stage even if you specify high bit rates. proDad are quite responsive so hopefully they'll fix this soon
