Good deal or not?: used but 2.4 GHz

Amateur running 8.0(c) and do 20-30 min family/friend projects.

Currently have 4 yr old Custom-built (by others) PC with AMD Athalon 64x20 Dual Core Processor 3800+ at 2.02 GHz. Has 2 GB RAM running XP Pro 64 bit.

A buddy has a 2 yr old HP Pavilion with Intel Core Quad at 2.40 GHz and 3 GB RAM using Vista. I might get an affordable deal from him.

Some questions:

* would I notice decent performance gains on rendering times?

* if not... what would be the next system step-up I should target?

* presume it is mostly CPU itensive vs RAM vs disk speed like if I got an SSD added in?

Appreciate the advice!

I'd pass.
Think at least an i5-750 -- preferably i7-920 or above for Vegas.

I'd pass because of the OS...skip Vista and get a system with Win7 because Vista is a resource hog.

Maybe .. but isn't ver 8 *not* officially supported for Win 7? If it works, fine .. but if he has problems Sony will not help.

Vegas 8 was the first version to be supported by Vista.
As said above, the latest 'better' cpu would be a i7, but it sounds as if the HP you are describing contains a Q6600 Quad Core processor, if so than the rendertimes for the John Cline render test
http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=4&MessageID=703292 runs approx 2 minutes.

Run the same test on your current machine and compare the results. Then find out What deal your friend is offereing and see how good of a deal it is for you.
