GoPro11 HEVC 10BIT Files

@EricLNZ Yep sorry, like I say in that post I should've started a new thread, when I searched GoPro Black 11 that post came up but I didn't look at the OP title,

If anyone has a GoPro11 file to share I'd appreciate it, I'm going to buy one but need some cash to come in 1st.

@Former user Hi, can you share those images on here so we can continue & do all your GoPro files have that P peak in the middle?

& would you put a ProRes file through that GOP app you have, I'm just curious as to how it looks, 👍

Hi Vegas users, are you able to play the 2 GOPRO 10bit HEVC files below perfectly smoothly at it's correct FPS, either in native 5.3K resolution or on a 4K timeline, using Best/FULL quality/resolution for playback, if you can't try other settings. Report back with what hardware you have, are you using Intel IGPU for GPU decode?

Skateboarder https://www.dropbox.com/s/9b9ftmq7k5tf3gr/GX0070-01.MP4?dl=0

This is the format of the file encoding, notice the P frame that seems to be acting like an I frame, are you familiar with this type of encoding, what's the purpose of it, could that be causing the slow down in Vegas?

@Former user This is what ProRes looks like. It's all I frames and is normally variable bit rate even if not very variable

On my desktop (see signature; Intel iGPU for decode; legacy HEVC off) almost perfect smoothness for playback on 4K 8-bit best/full timeline. Interestingly it's using quite a bit of my GPU as well as iGPU to decode and CPU.

In 32-bit mode closer to 10fps and VEGAS is hitting some kind of bottleneck as the CPU and GPU have power to spare.

For the other one with 8-bit full, best/full it plays back at around 21fps. When I close the scopes window it's at full playback speed with only slight stutters if I skip the playhead around. 32-bit full is <10fps.

@Former user Hi, thanks for the ProRes, that is interesting, I'm going to have to find an app that shows that 👍

Just to update this post - the other day when I played the skater clip playback was 💩, but since yesterday all clips play just fine after a little warm up, I just downloaded the biker one, it to played well after a little bit, I've not changed anything in Vegas since the other day.

I filmed it, this was straight after download, no pre-play/loading,

The sea sunset at the end is 3840x2160 50fps

@RogerS I get similar speed to you and Gid for the bicycle rider, but you and the other gentleman with a similar Intel 13 series CPU to you both played skateboarder guy better, what happens if you change your GPU decoder to your Nvidia card?

Interested to know if it's GPU decoder related or your 13600K that's making the difference, although now GID's system is playing skateboard guy fine also

Good question, not sure I can answer it. With NVDEC simple playback performance was rock solid at 29.97fps. Skipping around it was possible to get it to perform worse for a few seconds- seems to depend where on the timeline you start from matters.

@Former user

I just put the skater on the timeline again just to see, clicked 'Yes' when asked 'Do you want the Project to match ...' . Playback was ok, it took a few loops to reach full fps & even then it would flutter just occasionally 22-29fps, getting better which each loop.

I put the biker on the timeline clicked 'Yes', & it played full 23.97fps pretty much straight away, so like yesterday I put the 29.97fps skater after the 23.97fps biker on the 23.97fps project, it played perfectly, 😂😂🤷‍♂️

All testing was done Best (Full) but i turned it down to Good (Half), I don't see the difference on screen & it plays better.

@Former user Strange thing is although I"ll logically set BEST/HALF on a 4K project because I only have 1440P monitors I've never noticed it make a difference, and sometimes I've thought I've noticed 1/2 resolution BEST doing a worse job at playback.

It looks like the Vegas Community aren't interested in getting to the bottom of this, and with this dataset of 3 people we can only guess what hardware plays a difference if at all.

Well, I don't need to download any of the GoPro files, as I have plenty of my own. Can see signature for both of my builds and all cameras.

I walk daily to keep the VA doctors' happy, and use my GoPro Hero 9/10/11 (mostly) as if it was a support animal. The footage is either 4K30p (29.970), 5K30p, or 5.3K30p; all at High Bit Rate (though no option for the 5,6,7 - introduced with the Hero 8). Whether it is with build #1 using VP20, VP19, VP18, or DaVinci Resolve 18.5 B3, or build #2 using VP20, to ensure I have the issues of playback due in part to no Integrated GPU, I transcode the files using Shutter Encoder to ProRes 422. Problem Solved!

Oh, and with my Three Canon Cameras, they are all set to shoot CLog3 (usually Cinema Gamut), and I transcode them to ProRes 422 HQ. Decided to do that every time since even though VP20 on either build will "playback" the 4:2:2 10-Bit HEVC, it is definitely not "Butter-Smooth". Plus, only having the "Free" version of DaVinci, it won't even open those files natively.

As for the AX-53, just makes sense to transcode that 4K30p XAVC 100Mb to ProRes 422 as well.

It will make your Editing NLE happy.

Happy Editing!

If you want something tested ask Rob at TechGage who has a variety of hardware and is doing tests on VEGAS.

I don't have a GoPro and don't have any plans of getting one, but I'll show my work.

Preview/Half runs smoothly and is a higher pixel dimension than my 2560x1440 monitor.

If I was shooting HEVC at greater than UHD, I would do as @Chief24 does and convert to Pro Res in Shutter Encoder. I never convert media from my Sony RX10IV.
