GPU accelerated render stuttering/flickering

Rohrbrezel wrote on 8/7/2023, 6:42 AM

Hey guys,

I am having this weird issue with my gpu rendered videos. CPU based rendering and the source files are not affected.

GPU video reference (flickering):
CPU video reference (as it should be):

The source video file is recorded with OBS as desktop capture in 4k using GPU recording aswell.
Bitrate is 120Mbit/s and 60fps and 2 audio tracks.
h264 in obs and vegas.

The problem isn't sporadic. It's always the same sections in the videos. The example from above is a Remant 2 recording. It's an in game puzzle.
The problem isn't game specific but there seems to be some kind of pattern.
In Fallout 4 opening the pip-boy perk chart had the same issues even leading to async video/audio files.
In Far Cry 4 it was the world map.
It somehow is related to some kind of ingame overlays that seem to affect the gpu accelerated rendering process. But only Vegas has problems with it.

I tested it with my NVidia 2080TI on one machine and I tested it with my AMD Radeon 7900XTX on the gaming machine.
There were differences between NVidia and AMD, but still unusable (flickering).

It tried to render it with Filmora and Xmedia Recode and the gpu rendering result was perfectly fine.
I am using the Vegas Pro 20 license. No pirated software. Adjusting DRAM and other suggestions didn't work out. I've already tried quiet a lot but now I am out of ideas and thinking of using another program...

h264 cpu render is too slow with <10fps per second on my older machine. It would be nice to utilize the gpu.

Any ideas how to improve my situation or atleast explain how ingame renders are affecting the vegas gpu renders down the line? I just don't understand...

That's because Sony Vegas does not exist anymore for a number of years.

Ok. I looked it up. It's called Vegas Pro now, right? I edited my post accordingly. I am using "Vegas Pro 20"
But how does it correlate with the rendering problems?

Therefore we have to know the MediaInfo of the sourcefiles following this link: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-post-mediainfo-and-vegas-pro-file-properties--104561/
and what is the driverversion for the Nvidia?

Source File: https://pastebin.com/7DgYxmnH

Nvidia Driver: 536.23

I think the reason is that your sourcefile has variable framerate and that does Vegas not like.
Use the free app Handbrake or Shutter Encoder to convert that file to a fixed framerate and for new files change your OBS settings to make files with fixed framerate.
Use for your Nvidia the newest Studio driver 536.67 following your Vegas /Help/Check for Driver Updates

Alright. Studio driver matches the online version now.
In OBS I added the "force-cfr=1" option to force cfr.

The actual source file is cfr already. I am using the OBS remux tool to convert mkv to mp4. After that mediainfo shows the vfr. What I posted earlier was the already remuxed file I guess.

Handbrake didn't work. I converted the file to cfr.

Other things I tried:
Changing OBS output file directly to mp4. Didn't work.
Even though mediainfo says its cfr:

Frame rate mode                          : Constant
Frame rate                               : 60.000 FPS

Enabled Vegas Pro mkv I/O experimental feature to use the mkv files directly. Didn't work either.

I changed "RAW Processor To Use" in Vegas Pro from Auto to OpenCL and CUDA. No luck.

Any other suggestions?

Not me except, after the source is cfr and the latest Studio drivers are installed, to do a full reset of Vegas Pro 20
