Gradually discover a contour (mask) / hand drawing effect

davewire35 wrote on 11/5/2024, 6:40 AM

Hi all, I would have liked to know your tips for gradually discovering an outline (in my case, the outline of the island of Corsica) as if this outline was drawn by hand. I tried with a mask and key frames but I don't find it very conclusive, it requires a lot of different key frames and I also want the feeling of the "drawing" to be of the same speed.

So I was thinking that there might be a different but more efficient solution. I imagined a kind of "stamp" that would move on the outline by keyframe also and that would let appear the outline already discovered rather than a mask with bizarre shapes and which does not give the fluidity that I would like to obtain. I hope to be clear enough in my explanations lol, I put some photos of my example.

It's the same I would also like to use this technique to simulate someone writing, who would follow the outline of the letters as if it were written by hand.

Thanks for your tips!

@davewire35 I'm not sure there're any plugins that can do the mask effect you're talking about.

However, there's a way to draw the line manually, you can download and try RouteAnimation FX mentioned in this post: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/my-vegas-pro-utilities-tools--105615/

If you had Vegas Post, now sadly discontinued, I'd suggest looking at the Neon Path effect in Vegas Effects.

And if you have Magix Movie Studio, that comes with a utility app called Travel Maps, which allows you to animate tracing a path.

There's a donationware utility available that does something similar. May be worth a look: https://www.routegenerator.net/index.html

Thank you both, your answers and suggestions bring me a lot in the end for another question that I had, namely the route of a plane or boat journey so thank you because it will be useful to me!! To see if I can redo the entire contours of my island by hand with this process but otherwise I think I will have to use a whole set of masks to gradually discover an existing contour or a font that I couldn't do it again with these traces.

Hi,

By far the best would be to get and use Travel Maps that comes with Magix' video programs, Video Pro X, Movie Studio and PhotoStory. The least expensive option is probably PhotoStory 2024 currently on sale for 20$ on the Magix.com site. Look under Photo.

You can do a lot more with Travel Maps that just putting a route on a map. You can make an animated line on anything.

Here are a couple of examples:

For animating text or animated lines and other objects, an alternative is Bixangelo from OuterSpace Software combined with BluffTitler.

Here is a simple example of how I used animating word:

You can spend days doing what you are suggesting and not get a good result, or minutes or an hour or so to get a good result.

thank you for these suggestions, indeed Bixelangelo could well interest me with handwritten texts, it's a shame, that native Vegas does not offer solutions like travel map to draw a curve or simulate handwriting, that seems basic to me. Otherwise I tried Route Animation, it works on VP22 so it will help me a lot!

Clock wipe starts always at 12 o´clock (unfortunately), that's probably also the reason to call the transition clock wipe

@davewire35 Hi, I would second the Travel Map option @john-brown suggested, I've been looking for an outline fx for some time & still haven't found one. Boris Title Studio has an animated outline option & so does Adobe AE but both are not cheap paid products. (Boris also has BCC DVE which will outline something but it won't animate it) , I've had Magix Movie Studio for 20yrs & Vegas Pro since VP18 but still go to Travel Maps if I wish to make this kind of animated outline.

As you have Vegas which is Magix owned piece of software I would suggest you try the Magix Movie Studio 'Upgrade' option from Magix £19.99, this includes Travel Maps. (This is a new separate program not an upgrade & so will not affect your Vegas program)

Here I very quickly put together an animated map outlining Corse, I used a VP Chroma Key to remove the white background, I forgot to reset the scale before exporting from Travel Maps but the scale was easily corrected in Vegas, @john-brown would be able to advise further if you decide to use this option.

PS, I got bored towards the end & didn't finish the whole island, that's why it doesn't go all the way around 😂

wow so nice !!

excellent, thank you for this example, it could suit me perfectly!! I understand that you didn't go all the way to the outlines of the map, I did it myself and I was tired of it and what's more I was limited in the number of points lol So I can also put a transparent background? if I want to apply this outline to a video (like my sea background with rising sun)?

You can use the background you want and the maps you want?

The number of locations is not limited?

You can also manage the color of the line, its thickness I presume??

Do you have a link to this magix supplement that I am not mistaken?? so cool if travel maps is included, I use this system a lot for my roadtrip films and locate the places where I film.

edit : I dont have magix movie studio so it's more 39,99 dollars ? https://www.magix.com/int/video-editor/movie-studio/?_oB=premium ? Is Movie Studio 2025 Platinum a good vegas complement for you? It looks cool like that

@davewire35 Hi,

I understand that you didn't go all the way to the outlines of the map,

I didn't try to be accurate as it was just an example, also once zoomed back out that detail would be lost.

-----------------------------------

The number of locations is not limited?

I honestly don't know if there is a limit, I got to 166 & stopped because of boredom not because I ran out of points 🤷‍♂️

------------------------------------------------

So I can also put a transparent background?

No you can't export from Travel Maps with a transparent background, I swapped the map I was tracing for a solid white png & then Chroma keyed out the white background in Vegas.

-----------------------

You can also manage the color of the line, its thickness I presume??

Yes you ca change the line colour & thickness, there's an option to make round or curved corners also.

--------------------------

Do you have a link to this magix supplement that I am not mistaken?? so cool if travel maps is included, I use this system a lot for my roadtrip films and locate the places where I film.

I'm not sure what that means, Travel Maps is included with Magix Movie Studio....

https://www.magix.com/gb/video-editing/movie-studio/version-comparison/#c1833696

------------------------

PS.. You edited while I was typing.

edit : I dont have magix movie studio so it's more 39,99 dollars ? https://www.magix.com/int/video-editor/movie-studio/?_oB=premium ? Is Movie Studio 2025 Platinum a good vegas complement for you? It looks cool like that

Try going to the Magix website, choose Upgrade as the option, you can go through the steps, I message will show saying 'Congratulations.... ', you don't have the 'Continue' or pay anything to find this out ..

I don't really want to get into if it is good or not, I very rarely use it anymore, It will export simple projects very fast & it has some useful templates for the basic user but I have a long list of things it can't do, one of the very simple ones being it can't export with transparency, not even a png with a transparent background... You could very easily live without Magix Movie Studio, it is a very basic editor with basic controls for the basic user. I only recommended this for the added Travel Maps app not the video editor.

Hi,

I indicated to you that you can get Travel Maps with PhotoStory 2024 for $20. Here is the link. This is not an upgrade, but the actual price. However, the upgrade price to 2025 is the same price.

If you can get Movie Studio Platinum 2025 for the same price, go for it. Since you have Vegas, you should qualify for the upgrade price. It will let you know when you try to purchase. I doubt that there will be a better price.

There is no trial for Travel Maps. Once the program is activated after purchase, you get access to download the additional content, including Travel Maps.

Travel Maps is installed as a stand-alone with an icon on the desktop. Thus you can run it without going into Movie Studio/PhotoStory.

PhotoStory has the same content as Movie Studio and Video Pro X. However, PhotoStory has less tools as it is geared more using photos than using video clips.

The programs come with a lot of useful content, including some sound effects and music.

You can purchase additional content from the Store within Movie Studio/PhotoStory. There are themepacks for Travel, Ultimate Travel Package and Travel Package Europe, elements of which can also be used with Travel Maps.

Keep in mind that Movie Studio is not the equivalent of Vegas and is a light version of Video Pro X. There are high-end tools that it doesn't have that are in Vegas, but it has tools and features not in Vegas. The one feature that sets VPX, Movie Studio and even PhotoStory apart is the multi-timeline capability, called Movies. You can have multiple movies in a project, each with it own settings (16:9, portrait, square), like in Adobe Premier Pro and DaVinci Resolve (they go further and you can open 2 timeline windows at the same time). I use multiple movies for various purposes.

I make home videos, and most of them are travel-related. For the animated routes, I use either Travel Maps or Vasco da Gama with Vasco Street Maps, depending on what I want to show.

Well I tested clock wipe, it's interesting but not conclusive and quite precise, there are areas which appear at the same time hence blanks which break the continuity of the line and sometimes the line is slow and comes to accelerate. you would have to move the image to avoid certain plotting bugs but as a result it is no longer centered.

Yes, sorry, I mixed up the brushes a bit between the different versions, great for photostory, actually the price is affordable for 20 dollars. On the other hand, I do have Vegas Pro 22 but no old version of Movie Studio so I cannot claim an upgrade, I tested it. Hi,

I suggest that you just try to get the upgrade to Movie Studio 2025 Platinum. It will tell you if you don't qualify for upgrade pricing. Since you have a Magix video product, you might qualify. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

If you have questions about Movie Studio other than for Travel Maps, I suggest that you open a thread on the Magix.info forum. You may want to try out the beat detectors - two methods, one of which puts markers on transients.

Vegas Pro 22 does have Beat and Tempo detection. As for feature differences between Vegas and VPX/MMS, we've gone over that in the Magix forum, and it is off topic here in this thread. You are more than welcome to start a new post where the differences can be compared if you like.

Please stay on topic which is about drawing paths, not product comparisons.
