great article about sound & picture

I came across this article about movies and their scores on IMDB.com, from the Bristish Film Institute. I noticed that this is a big topic on this forum. Find it here:

I'm of the opinion that the "picture is only half the picture - the sound is the other half". It's interesting to hear from directors such as Scorsese and Wenders - how they approach sight and sound. Fascinating stuff... enjoy!

I agree, pictures are only half. The other half MIGHT be sound, if done properly. I give negative marks for sound, including music, that overpowers the words.

I HATE films where I can't begin to hear the dialogue. That being most of them in one place or another. Very dramatic, loud or otherwise distracting music during a tender, quiet spoken dialogue: WHAT DID THEY SAY?

I think the sound is more like 80%. Or, in some cases, more like 95%. Try watching the Six O'clock news with the sound off and see how much you get out of it.

Or try to watch a movie without a picture. :)

I agree sound is important, but movies in the silent era were quite powerful.

TV or movies without a picture is radio and that's been pretty successful for 75 years or so... :)

You are right, but movies have been around longer. the first movie camera was created in 1895.

What??? The Smell-o-Tron™ was broken that night too? Better go get your money back, or at least get a coupon for free popcorn next time. *sheesh*
