I would think an art store would have waterpaint like for children. "Chroma Green" is just an outlandish shade of green like neon, not something special that costs a lot.

Remember it doesn't have to be green - any colour that is not featured elsewhere in the picture can be easily keyed out - for faces, there are some vivid coloured zinc creams which may do.

Incidentally - it's usually backgrounds that are chroma keyed - what are you going to replace faces with?

I think I would avoid paint and use cloth (like a leotard or hood) that is green or blue.

Paint can be messy and smear.

Try Ben Nye ML-32 or ML-33, non-toxic green face painting makeup. I'm familiar with the Ben Nye line but I'm sure any other film and theatrical makeup company has similar products.

Any outdoor hunting or sporting good store should have the cammo paint kit. If you have a military surplus store in your area they should have it too! The kit usually comes in multiple colors like green black brown tan etc.

I recently did this in another way, using Beauty Box to get an automated mask of all skin tissue, with no green or other paint.

This works by keying the equivalent of the hemoglobin line on a vector scope. The "skin color" will be picked up regardless of whether the skin is classified as "white" or "black" or "red" or any other color, because the hemoglobin is what the camera sees (through subsurface scattering).

I was using Beauty Box for its intended purpose when I stumbled upon its auto-mask function and found it to work quite well in most situations. There is a demo download so you can test it yourself, if interested.

It's on sale through the end of today, and requires After Effects 7 through CS4, PP CS4 or FCP 6+.

(I have no relationship with Digital Anarchy other than as a customer.)

You could always buy a Chroma Key Suit. Of course you could also dye a pair of long john's too. ;-)

Would this solve your problem:

If you look to the bottom of the page they also do gloves and hoods.
