grouping does not work

I have a series of events on a track. I select all by using the "selection edit tool" (this allows me to draw a box around all events thus selecting them.) Or by clicking on the first event and right clicking "select to end". Then I try to group them by either hitting "g" on my keyboard while all events are still selected or by "edit > group". Then when I try to move the entire group of events from one track to another, if I click anywhere else first (thus deselecting all events) only the individual event that I happen to click on moves to the new track. I cannot get all the events to move between tracks even if I've previously grouped them (they do however move as a group along the original track.) Is this how Vegas handles grouping? Isn't there a way to permanently group elements so they move around the timeline as if they were ONE event when grouped?

I can see a certain logic to not allowing everything in a group to be moved from track to track as a group unless you've selected them explicitly. Imagine if you have, say, 6 tracks of things all grouped together and you want to move one of them up a track. Does Vegas automatically make new tracks for everything?

If you want to reselect all the members of a group first select one member and then hit <shift+G>. Then you can move them all. It's less hassle than it would be if they all moved across tracks by default.

Vegas could do a better job with grouping. For instance, audio+video tracks are grouped the same as everything else. If you group the audio and video of two or more events to a group and then clear the group you'll find that the audio and video of any clip is ungrouped. Ungrouping a set of events totally removes all grouping-even from the same clip.

Rather, there should be some hierarchy of grouping. Consider a vector graphics program like CorelDraw. There you can have groups of groups of groups. When you break up a group you are left with the subgroups until you get down to the individual objects. Corel also dispays text on the status bar to say what you've selected, I.E. "Group of 12 objects on layer 1". (There is also a "Combine" command in coreldraw but it's Vegas equivalent would be "Render to a new track")

In Vegas, clips ought to start out in their own audio+video group (as they do). If you gang several clips into a group then they should be a group of grouped objects. when you ungroup them the underlying groups should stay intact.

Did you accidentally turn on "Ignore Event Grouping" on the tool bar? If so, just turn it off and they will all move together.

I should have said "grouping does not work as I expected it to" as my subject. Rob - I agree with your analysis. I expected a grouping heirarchy.

No "ignore event grouping" was not turned on

I think I misunderstood the original problem. To do what you are describing, you must SELECT the desired clips - not group.

That's great. A 20 year old thread and it still helps!
