The video codec is not needed to open the file.It is only needed when rendering the result.

I have never used the Panasonic codec, but I have used the Mainconcept codec, and it comes with a small installation program. The Panasonic codec should either come with an installation program or it should have an INF file which you can right click on and then choose install. I suggest you find the directions for that codec and then follow the directions given there.

WARNING:
If you already have the MC DV codec installed, be warned that the Panasonic codec identified in the Deshaker Guide download section identifies itself as (FOURCC =) dvsd - as does the MC DV codec. You can see this when selecting 'Compression' from the 'Video' menu item.

Each will knock out the other as far as a selection choice in Virtual Dub depending on which is installed last.

The Vdub CODECS.ini file expects that the PANA codec should be PDVC.

If you go ahead and change the PANADV.INF file substituting PDVC for DVSD before install, the problem disappears.

Fred, did you download the Virtual Dub 1.6 beta version or the "stable" 1.5.10 version?

FYI, I downloaded 1.5.10 into an XP Pro, Vegas 5 setup similar to yours. I also got the "Couldn't locat decompressor for format 'dvsd' (unknown) error msg. I wound up rendering the dv clip to "uncompressed" out of Vegas and importing that into VirtualDub. Then proceeded to deshake and exported via Huffy back into Vegas -- where I rerendered the Huffy clip in dv. whew. I'd sure like to find out what's up in order to straight into and back out of VDub. With XP, I don't know why you would get the error message.

Fred, I just went to the VirtualDub Forum and signed on. Did a search for our error message and got several hits. Based on their input I've upgraded to version 1.6.1 which is supposed to fix this. I'll give it a try tonight. Darryl

Yep, that was it. They've got an excellent forum over there. Search turned up the answers right off. Gonna add the Main Concept DV codec and I'm off to the races. Good luck with your efforts. Darryl
