Handbrake issue

Downunder wrote on 4/26/2012, 6:06 AM
Hello

I have just used Handbrake (0.9.6) for the first time and on a 15 minute video (that will be uploaded to You Tube and Vimeo). I have found a problem in that the audio gradually goes completely out of sync during the length of the video, the last few minutes are woeful.

I have followed the great video tut - Vegas to Vimeo,You Tube and Web and read the very helpfull HD video for the web. I have used all the recomendations re rendered out to QT (from Vegas) using the DNxHD 2.3.7 Avid codec and rendered out uncompressed audio as per the updated settings to render out audio described in HD video for the web (Vegas users).

Main settings in Handbrake: Video is MP4 (H.264), audio settings (as per the image link below). All other settings are as shown in the Vid tut and other

The video/audio in the rendered QT file from Vegas Pro 11 is all perfectly in sync, it is only goes out of sync when rendered from Handbrake. I have done a few renders to make sure but they are all (go) out of sync.

Any advice or help would be most appreciated.

Thanks

First - what are you playing back on? QT player is not to be trusted - I had the same issue, but after downloading VLC player I found that the very same clip that was out of sync in QTP was in sync all the time.

Hi Peter

Once it is rendered out to .MP4 from Handbrake I played it in VLC and Windows Media Player. I also had a test upload to YT, all out of sync.....

Oh - my experience was different. I stopped using Handbrake for a while and rendered to either Sony or Main Concept mp4 in Vegas, which solved the sync issue but with much bigger files. Since then I found that Handbrake was in fact ok ... hopefully others can suggest something ....

Yes I tried Sony mp4 and the files were a heap bigger than Handbrake. Do you render from Vegas to QT7 with the Avid codec?

Yes, I use the Avid DnxHD, which produces a huge temporary file which Handbrake can accept.

@Downunder,

That image of your HandBrake audio settings indicates you are rendering to mono. There might be a good reason for this, and I would doubt that it's associated with audio sync problems. However, there is a good, recent discussion of HandBrake audio here: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=4&MessageID=797451Any improvements to Handbrake Audio?[/link]

I usually use Avid DNxHD in a .mov file as well. .MXF works video wise, but you have to choose either the right or left side audio. It can't use left and right as a stereo pair. XDCAM .mp4 works well. Cineform avi's aren't recognized by Handbrake. Handbrake defaults expecting some sort of surround sound file. You have to change it to stereo each time you use it.

Was your source audio file something other than a PCM 48k. For instance a variable bitrate MP3... though I'm not sure that would make any difference, nor do I think a mono file would cause sync issues. I just used HB a few days ago and didn't have any problems. Latest build, 0.9.6 I believe.
Probably a quick easy fix would be remuxing in a new AAC audio track.

Laurence, you said:
"MXF works video wise, but you have to choose either the right or left side audio. It can't use left and right as a stereo pair."

Can you elaborate on this? I just started a new thread before I saw this one. When I render to MXF, in the MP4 that handbrake creates, the audio is sped up. In a one minute video, the audio sounds like it's on fast forward and finishes after 35 seconds. I suspect it has something to do with your comment?
