handle clips

how can i handle clips when going out to after effects?

say i have a 5 second clip in vv that part of a 20 minite clip. i only want the 5 sec clip in ae. i have had to render the vv timeline just to get a clip the right lenght to bring into ae. is there a better way?

You only have to render the 5 seconds of the timeline. Not the whole lot.

Make your selection on the timeline (do you know how to do that?). I would recommend once you have made your selection you create a region (press the R key) so that you can easily re-render if you need to.

Then just do File-Render As and select the option to render only the selected region.

I would also recommend you render that 5 seconds using the Default (uncompressed) AVI template rather than use any of the DV AVI templates. For 5 seconds of video it will not matter how big this file is.
