Hardware Analog to DV

Well after looking through some of the post and not really finding what I was looking for I'll ask.
I need a way (better way) to get analog to DV. I have been using my ATI AiW 128 pro (avi 720x480,DV encoder) but file size is way to big, I don't know too much about encoders. So how is it that my video from my DV camera is 720x480 but much smaller file.
I'm hoping some has some idea what I need, most manufactures are so generic with specs it's hard to figure what I need.
Thanks to all can help

Why not patch the analogue source through your DV camera, and capture firewire from the camera. (disable device control first).

(I'm assuming the camera has analogue in/out)

Using your DV camera works fine. For a stand-alone devie, check out the Canopus ADVC-100, it does analog to DV and DV to analog (the latter is useful for External Monitor use while someone is out shooting with the camcorder).
