Hardware compatibility Slowpokes

Lets get it together SonicFoundry... I would have soo much more gratitude in a company that would make it a serious consideration to try and get with the times as far as hardware compatibility (H/C from here on) thing goes. Hmmmm? hasn't the GL2 and XL1s been around for quite some time? Vegas 4 is cutting edge, but the H/C guys(you know who you are) are slackers!

Right now a am in the market for a new VTR. VTRs carry a hefty enough price tag(as do DV camcorders) that there should be more assurance from Software Developers rather than posts for reccommended hardware on forums. There are only 6 antiquated VTRs listed on the H/C section of the web site for Vegas that seem to be gathering dust.
If SF would be compassionte enough to ease the greatist fear of the A/V world..... SYSTEM INCOMPATIBILTY ...... It would move from a 9 straight to a 10 in my book!
If SF could aid in simplifying hardware purchasing buy testing a few more pieces of hardware(c'mon there can't be more than a score of con/pro-sumer VTRs out there)there would be no reason to even consider another A/V editor.

Great work Vegas development team
Phooey on you H/C Guys!

Midimikey,

Have you considered calling or emailing support to find out which VTR's (or other HW you're curious about) are supported by Vegas? It just seems counterintuitive to expect that you can cajole SOFO into providing the information you desire by insulting them on the public forum. Just a thought.

Thanks,

Shawn

Yeah, it might be worth checking in to the software before purchasing it to see if it will fit your needs, and if not, get something that will.

If anything else was supported I'm sure it would be on the hardware compatibility list. And if it isn't listed this is Sonic Foundry's recommendation:

"Note: This is not the only hardware supported by Vegas and Video Capture, but these devices were specifically tested by Sonic Foundry. If you have questions about video hardware that does not appear on this list, you are encouraged to post a question in our online forums."

I need a little more reassurance than the recommendation of forum users for big ticket items. I'm pointing out a weakness in their general product support that would make Vegas 4.0 the best video editor out there. I hardly think that giving them a 9 out of 10 is insulting.

Am I asking too much?

Those hardware support lists are useless anyway. The Matrox RT2500 is susposed to support the Panasonic AJ-d230H DVCPro machine, but doesn't. It's even on the DV options for the matrox card!

You gotta remember too, SF doesn't have hundreds of people checking out all the different kinds of hardware there are, and they take the money that they save on that off their product (look at Premiere's retail price compaired to Vegas!). I'd give B&H Photo/Video (http://www.bhphotovideo.com) a call in NYC. They would probely know if the hardware would work. And if they don't, try writing into DV Magazine or something like that. They are always testing out the new stuff almost noone can afford. :)

You may want to consider re-reading my post. I just meant to suggest that your approach to solving the problem is not direct. SOFO only encourages you to post to the forum, they didn't say you couldn't speak to them directly.

"I hardly think that giving them a 9 out of 10 is insulting."

Perhaps not - I'm certain that when you said "Phooey on you H/C Guys!", you meant that in the best way possible, however you can see how others may have misconstrued your statement and taken it as an insult (which I'm sure you didn't mean to do).

Anyway, I hope you find the information you're looking for - and I hope SOFO updates their HC list.

Peace,

Shawn

I love Vegas and refuse to switch to anything else for the sake of picking up a new piece of equipment. But I also don,t feel like being limited in my choice and being forced to search ebay for older gear. Half of the VTRs on SOFO Hardware compatibility aren't even on the manufacturers web sites because they are discontinued. And most of them do not support all sizes of DV tape, like a few of the newer, well priced ones I,ve been drooling over, not to mention a few are also portable and can be used in the field as well.
And as far as support around my neck a da woods, everyone deal in Mac for A/V.

I just think if SOFO had more iteams on their hardware compatibility list it would not only please guys like me, but also encourage more people to take the plunge towards Vegas without fearing hardware incompatibility.

Lets face it, if your going to be doing some serious A/V editing, you're going to buy a VTR. With all the new goodies on the newer models choices should not be limited or risky. I don't think this is a difficult or unreasonable request for SOFO to accomodate.
