Hardware Support

I am interested in buying Vegas 5, but it seems like it only supports high end equipment. I have a Sony DCR-HC30 DV Camcorder which is not high-end, around $450 and my friends have good cameras, but nothing high-end. Will Vegas 5 support these? I don't want to spend the money and it not support my stuff. Thank you

Yes - vegas will support that camera. Not sure what you mean by (or where you heard) Vegas only supports high-end equipment?

You just need to connect it via the firewire port. Needs no special equipment other than that.

However... you might like to consider initially getting Vegas Moviestudio and upgrading to the full Vegas later on.

I've at times used an inexpensive Canon ZR45 camera and Vegas accepts the input via firewire without trouble as it does with many less expensive cameras. The real issue is does your camera have firewire IEE1394 out? If so, you shoudln't have any problems.

I had Sony Movie Studio (also called "Screenblast 3.0") but I lost the disc, so I have to get another program. I really liked Screenblast, I just wished it had a few more options like better effects and all the neat stuff. Is Vegas Movie Studio better than it's predecessor and if so, do you recommend also getting Audio Forge (entry-level one, I forgot what it's called) and Acid(entry level also)? I'm not a professional videographer, but I really would like a program(s) w/ a lot of options.

Vegas Movie Studio is a fair step up from what Screenblast was, with a lot of great features. It's still not quite as robust as Vegas 5 is, but a very good tool.
I'm a big fan of the Studio Suite, it's very powerful. On a bet, we cut together a Broadway show promo with Vegas Movie Studio and Sound Forge Audio Studio. The only thing I needed to step out of those apps to do was Noise Reduction. You'd be surprised at what you can do with Vegas Movie Studio, including light compositing.
However, if you want lots of video tracks, audio tracks, good compositing, infinite control, etc, Vegas 5 is the way to go.
Any cam that will work with Vegas Movie Studio will work with Vegas 5, and with a card like the Canopus ADVC1394, even camcorders that don't have Firewire will work fine.
