Nice list. However, I saw one that was really got my blood boiling. It's some snot-nosed kid from Tucson, Arizona that had posted a "tutorial" on YouTube that describes exactly how to pirate a copy of Vegas v8 for free. He said that he wanted a better video editor than Windows Movie Maker, but he didn't have $600 to buy Vegas, so he decided to steal it! (You know, kid, you could get off your lazy, illiterate ass and EARN the $600!)

He goes through the process of stealing Vegas, step-by-step, including the URLs of where to get the key generators and everything. UNBELIEVABLE! I was going to flag the video to tell YouTube that the video was describing how to perform an illegal act, but amazingly, this type of video is not on the list of unacceptable content. Also unbelievable.

The text on this criminal's video says, "To Start Of Remember i do not encourage piracy in anyway this video is for educational purposes only!!" Nonsense! Despite their claims, YouTube has absolutely no respect whatsoever for the protection of copyrights or intellectual property. This particular video has been posted since June. I'm not naive, I know that software piracy is rampant, but I was surprised to see a video tutorial on YouTube describing exactly how steal something.

I guess one could echo Bill Gate's comment about the number of pirated copies of Windows in China "If they're going to pirate something I'd rather it was...."

But on top of that of the two tutorials I did try to watch one was deleted from Youtube and the other one on rotoscoping was from someone who admits he couldn't get it to work!

Seems like this site is just using a search engine to build links, there's no actual content hosted by them and no peer group review of the content at all. Maybe this is what Grazie meant with his exclamation marks. It certainly isn't somewhere I'd point a new user to.

Exactly!! Makes me mad to.

Would it be possible to report it to YouTube, so they would put it down?

I looked all over for somewhere to report this video, but I couldn't find anything. There is a "Flag" button on the video's page, but none of the complaint categories fit the offense. There is a whole list of things that YouTube considers "against the rules", but providing explicit, step-by-step instruction on how to do something blatantly illegal is not one of them.

Thanks John. I have now removed the link.

Pity, there was much there that would be of use to many here.

Grazie,

My "beef" wasn't with the site that you posted, although it did contain the link to the YouTube video that I found so criminal.

I filed a "Piracy Report" with Sony via their "Contact Us" link on this page. I found another similar video on YouTube that had been up there for a little less than a year and had almost 300,000 hits. I suspect that Sony had to be aware of these videos, but I reported the videos to them anyway. We'll see what happens.

Please send a big "thank you" noticed to the MPAA & RIAA for this. Why? Because as far as they're concerned, the ONLY piracy that's wrong is piracy of hollywood films & hollywood music. They don't care about anything else.

You should see game sites: they (for the most part) don't care about the piracy of non-game software "because it helps the industry by letting people who couldn't afford the software learn it". Say you have a pirated copy of Maya & nobody cares. Say you have a pirated copy of a $50 game & you're banned. I'm sure the MPAA & RIAA would have the same attitude.

Any kid who thinks they need to spend that cash is stupid too: student discount.

Or, he could continue to be a lazy ass but shell out $100 for Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9 Platinum Edition Pro Pack. If the kid wants to get something better than Movie Maker, Movie Studio should give him a lot more than he has. I doubt that this kid needs more than 4 video tracks. Which to me is the essence of why pirating Vegas doesn't make sense, not only because it's a crime, but also because it has versions for every budget. Kids that pirate Vegas Pro really don't need it because they are not pros with needs for pro features. They would be just fine with Movie Studio.

And, if you really want Vegas Pro and you are on a budget, you can look on eBay or similar places for version 6 or 7 and the upgrade pack to 8. I was lucky about one year ago that B&H had 6 for $58 and the upgrade for $120, so I paid $178 for Vegas Pro. Now the upgrade is $350 on B&H, so I guess I was lucky to get it so cheap.

Seeing as how piracy of Vegas is now the topic, go back and listen to the recently discussed 'ad' for Vegas"

Notice the beeps in the audio?
Might also explain the bad cuts from trying to cut around them.
It could be something else but "unregistered copy" was what first came into my head.

Without saying too much, I recently commented on a youtube hosted video (I embedded it) in a thread that had another video embedded and in the link of "suggested videos" that pops up after the video finishes, the one I embedded was there. It was exactly the same kind of video that John Cline found. After I embedded it and made a comment about how wrong that was, I got a warning from Sony about posting videos on how to crack Vegas and the post was removed.

I understand the removal and the warning. It goes to show that even though my intent was not to provide a way to pirate movies but to bring attention to the fact that this guy was justifying it by saying it was for educational purposes. I was hoping Sony would do something about the video (not my post!).

Anyways, just thought I would add my 2 cents.

so wait, you got a warning because youtube bases suggested videos on key words, a piracy one got popped up as a suggested & they blamed YOU?

Has SCS because just another part of sony that no matter what, they kill you off if you try to do anything? Period?

I see a lot of this on HV20.com John. They pirate Vegas and then go onto places like HV20.com and ask "How come I can't drag my hi def file to the time line?"

"Well... because you have the pirated version which does not contain the mpeg encoders you idiot"
jrazz wrote on 12/20/2008, 9:11 AM
No, they didn't blame me b/c youtube suggested it- they warned me b/c I posted a direct link (embedded it) on the Sony Forums. Of course, thinking back, I see that I was in the wrong, but at the time my thought was- this is ridiculous that this would be a suggested video and I wanted to draw attention to that in a forum that is made up of members who paid for it (I wasn't thinking that others could come here and get that info as it is public and available on the web).

I think the warning was within their rights. If I would have just submitted it to Sony there would not have been a problem.

I found out the other day you can (new feature?) remove the "related videos" option when embedding videos on a site. Don't think it would work when posting on a forum like this though.
