Having trouble displaying maps

Hi

I'm trying to show a map in my project, but no matter haw many i have tried, they all seem to come out blur'd.

It's a holiday project, and would like to show where we are on the map as we travel around an island.

Have tried png, bmp, gif etc.

Can anyone give me any tips please, as how i might achive a high qual result.

Don't know a lot about this, but would it be possible for me to create a map in say coreldraw, and export it as some kind of vector graphic, then import it into vegas.

You see high qual maps on your tv all the time in the news etc, so it must be possible to do this.

thanks :-) ... Rad

How are you using the picture? (p.s. PNG should work GREAT)

For example, if you zoom in using Track Motion, it WILL get blurry because you are zooming in on the VIDEO screen. However, if you zoom in using Pan/Crop, it will use the full resolution of the picture.

So, can you provide a few more details?

At what resolution have you the map?

If you scanned it a good resolution is 200ppi, if the map is at least 10x15 cm.The image format is not the most important.

Have downloaded maps off the net, average size is about 350 x 350 pixles x 70 to 100 dpi.

Just played with the pan & crop, that seems to have helped a lot :-)

Thanks :-)

The maps are very slow to have a good video resolution, the video frame is 720x480 on NTSC and 720x576 on PAL, with this maps you can't make a big zoom.

A good size is 1200x1200 at 150. With this you can make zooms and pans on the map with a good quality.

Also, if you want to draw an animated line on your map tracing your route, i've got a little free utility illustrated here:

Here's another way that kind of demos how to use key frames to follow a road on roadmap. The how-to is on my site as a tutorial, the sample at Kelly's site below:

I just used the cookie-cutter to keep it simpler. You could go further and have a little car drive along or a plane fly above and cast a shadow, etc..

Sort of off the map topic but NASA should have some great satellite images available, the latest released shuttle radar topographic images are supposed to have a resolution of 30cms but it seems they're not releasing them at that res to the public which is a pity, would make for some great opening sequences (and hideous bandwidth hits).
Any one seen Omega Man?
I'd love to be able to do that with a real shot from space.

Besides NASA doing those kind of maps there's a couple companies that offer (at least used to) really cool image maps from space. One company published a map of Area 51 that wasn't suppose to be there.

A couple years back (before I had broadband, so painfully slow) you could go to some site and interactively zoom in right in your brower. If they had a map of your area, (that had the Chicago area), shot about 90-91 or so.

Well, it may be hard to belive but I was able to zoom in from this 'space map' right down to my own house! It took some doing to find the landmarks, but since I live on a cul-de-sac, near a couple little landmark parks, once I was sure I properly ID'ed a main intersection (where Naper Blvd, turns of Washingion, I could follow Royce Rd. and find my home. While black and white, you could order extra large glossy prints for about $35. The resolution was good enough you can easily see features like trees cars and sidewalks, etc..

UPDATE, they now added a means to specify your address, here I am! That little blop right of the cul-de-sac near the middle of the picture.

I did find a few commercial sites, one offers world maps for broadcast but they wanted very serious money.
You can now actualy order photoes from space for a fee, I think if they've already got what you want you pay a certain amount depending on how long it is since someone payed for it, if not, for a much higher fee you get about six shots and you just pray one of them is without cloud. But if within a time period other people buy the same shot you get a refund so it sounds like a fair arrangement. I

BillyBoy-

You sure are brave giving out your address AND providing an aerial look at your house... ;)

Really, the terraserver site IS pretty cool
