I don't know if you will be doing any editing, but John Meyer posted a workflow for going from HDV to DV 4:3 and it gives you the ability to pan your shot in post without loss of quality when going to DV. But to answer your question, I have never used the HC3, but have used the HC1 to shoot in DV.

I've played with my HC3 in DV mode a few times... even captured a sample and put it on disk. Needless to say, I don't do it anymore... Hi def is MUCH clearer. Even shooting hi def and then down converting to DV is much better.

Dv mode does however come in handy when you want to run some of your older dv tapes. No need to keep your old DV cams around.

DV mode makes the camera behave just like a DV camera.

Do a test shot before the real event, just so you are sure you have things set correctly.

DV mode is also handy if you're handing the tapes off to somebody else to do the editing.
