HD Camcorder videos don't upload

LoanGenie wrote on 1/23/2008, 5:15 PM
I have a JVC Everio GZ-MG155U Camcorder with a Hard Drive. The files it creates are MPG files with an extension of .MOD.
Those files will not download into Sony. I was told to download to my computer and then change the extension to .VOB. This works but I lose a lot in the translation. The video quality is rather poor compared to the original.

Is there another solution or format to change to? Perhaps a Conversion program to make the file readable?

Thanks for your help.

most likely, no. That's the major downer of consumer hard drive/disc camera's. They're meant to be used like the consumer VHS cameras of old: for playback only.

But I'm sure someone here can help.

bugger of a file format....

however, if i remember correctly, either 5 or 6 handled them. haven't had cause to work with them in a long time - alternatively, if i'm presented with the now, i'd probably find some converter to .avi

Simply changing a file extension will not change the quality of the video in the file. If you can change it to .VOB and Vegas will load it check the media properties. It's probably some slightly unusual frame size which is forcing Vegas to rescale the video.
If so then you need Best to get the best results and I'd also set the project de-interlace method to either Blend or Interpolate, try both to see which gives you the best results.

I had to do some work with JVC .MOD files, though they were supplied to me as data files on DVD.

Vegas was able to read them directly, though being MPEG2 (i.e. fairly heavily compressed), there are not particularly pleasant to edit with. In the end I re rendered them to DV and did the editing with those. Was a bit of a nuisance up front (I ended up using a program to convert them in batch mode), but it made for much smooth/happier processing in the edit itself.

Just my experience.

There is a free software utility called SDCopy, written by Sektionschef, that will remove the files from your JVC and convert them to MPEG2. It also works for Panasonic MPEG2 cams. You can get it here:
SDCopy.exe, version 1.997beta

Thank you all.

I'll try the suggestions and let you know the results.

By the way, Sony never returned my email requests for solutions. So your comments are all the more helpful.

There is also the free program called "SUPER".
It has a mode that only performs re-multiplexing so you load your MOD file and export it (re-multiplex) it out to either a VOB or Mpeg multi-plexed file, so you basically performing a file copy.

Instead...

#1 you could upgrade Vegas 7.0 to 7.0e (there's an update available), and the you can simply rename .TOD files to .mpg and use them directly in Vegas.

-OR -

#2 you can use PowerDirector Express to convert to .mpg (or other encoding)...

But it's always best to avoid re-encoding. So option #1 is best!
