I want to purchase an HD camera that records straight into a hard drive but I do not want a small hand held with a small lens. I see that Sony makes one but they start at 6,000. Any other recommendations with a budget that is smaller?
Those guys do some TERRIFIC bundles. Make sure you check and see any bundles with this unit in case you need anything else. Also, if you're a member at DVInfo, you get an extra percentage off.
Also, I am not sure if this applies to you or others, but for an additional $80 you can get BOTH the desktop and the laptop adapters. When I get ready to shoot the film this fall, I'll be picking up the laptop adapter. Could have saved myself $20 had I known about that when I ordered.
I've built some small-form-factor PCs specifically for fixed location work and they have one PCI-e slot. Each has a 3.0Ghz Core2 Duo, 4 GB of RAM, Win7-64 and a couple of 1.5 terabyte drives. They have a 7-inch touchscreen on the front so I don't necessarily need to have an external keyboard and mouse. They're about 12 inches deep, 8 inches wide and about 7 inches tall.
For what it's worth, here is a link to a portable Cineform recorder/monitor that takes HDMI or SDI input. It's pretty expensive but looks to be worth every penny.
I was thinking of buying the Sony Z5u which can record to HVR-MRC1K... The camera has a HDMI output as well as firewire.
So your saying that I won't be able to get full uncompressed 1920x1080 4:2:2 out of this setup at all? ...unless maybe I record to tape and use the HDMI port for capture??? (me lost).
If you record to tape and/or use the Firewire port (either live or playing back from tape) you will be getting 1440x1080 1.333 PAR at 4:2:0 compressed to 25Mbps MPEG2.
The only way to get uncompressed 1920x1080 4:2:2 (along with uncompressed PCM audio) out of the camera is to record live (not from tape) via the HDMI output. This is true of any of the HDV camcorders with HDMI out.
"Happy to report that Vegas x32 ingested the i-frame files just fine. Unfortunately, Vegas 64bit cannot ingest the files as it does not recognize the codec.
VirtualDub worked fine, as did Prism. Mpeg Streamclip does not recognize the files (no surprise there). VLC worked fine as expected."
Is this a Vegas 64bit issue or does the matrox codec not work with 64bit apps?
