Oh dear! I read it and it says "The HDV format specifies the data recording of MPEG2...

The problem, or course, is that MPEG2 is a cow to edit! Even if Sony use Sofo to improve Vegas's MPEG2 support, the degree of decompression that has to be performed by the PC means that any slightly long project will require huge amounts of grunt! I've been down that road and I didn't like it.

MPEG Audio Layer II? I hope they come up with something better than that...
Looks good otherwise.

Anthing that use temporal compression is going to be difficult to edit, ever tried to edit WMV files. I just render it to DV and then edit that and recompress. I can see no issue doing that with mpeg2 HD. Sure its going to take time and a LOT space on disks but then most of us working at the bottom of the food chain usually don't have to get projects done NOW if you know what I mean.

At least this should mean we can produce a HD product without having millions of dollars of equipment. Certainly it isn't going to look as good as what comes out of pro HD cameras and edit suites but with a little care I can see no reason why presentable products for the corporate and music video markets cannot be produced and they are the bread and butter for most.

I don't understand why they can't do it digitally and drop the mpeg2 out of the
camera.

HD SDI you mean? That is for their even more lucrative industry.
If you mean HDV through firewire, I think you'll be able to do this too.

Just that you won't be able to, within the common functions of the companies, be able to grap at a lower compression ratio to that of those stated. FireWire itself having some more headroom than 25Mbps!

Uncompressed HD and I-frame HD will both be attended to with other recording mechanisms - I'd guess.

The important element being that prosumer/consumer kit is the target market this will be injected into.N Sure beats USB streaming, a la Sony handycam and MPEG-1/MPEG4 StreamCorder semi-pro.

Lets await for the optics and chassis' to arrive with this new format that we are about ready to embrace.
