Yes, we've edited HD in Vegas. Vegas can work with the Blackmagic codec, uncompressed formats, and now HDV as well. you can also suffer through uncompressed.
The easier workflow is to make proxies of the HD in DV format, edit the proxies, and then replace the proxies with the HD when you're done editing. Then you have realtime, external preview without the pain of HD on a non-hardware assisted system.

So How would I get a 1080i Sony tape to the BlackMagic Codec?
and how do you do proxies....convert the hd to dv with time code and then
firewire the dvcam into the drive then save edl list?
