I need to add an external hard drive to my laptop system. I own several ADS Pyro external firewire cases that I have already used with up to 100 Gig hard drives.
Are there down sides to using a larger HD, say 250 Gig HD in an external firewire case?
You may find there's actually an upside to using larger drives, they're faster. If all is equal when the head moves from one cylinder to the next it traverses a larger amount of data. So on a larger drive using the same technology on the one woth the larger capacity the heads have to move less, hence overall the drive is faster in use.
At the same time if the extra capacity was achieved by adding more platters then it'll run a bit warmer as they'll be more air friction.
