HD Real Time Video Previews

Just bought Vegas 8.1 an installed it on a new 64bit XP Pro Dell Quad Core 3 Ghz 8 gb ram, and would like to find an animation 1080 HD file format I can render out of CS3 After Effects that will playback in REAL TIME in Vegas, look good, and not be a huge file size (i.e.not uncompressed avi).

Any hints would be appreciated.

You are limiting your options by using Vegas Pro 8.1 to just 64-bit codecs of which there aren't that many. Quicktime Animation would be huge (smaller than uncompressed but still pretty big) and may not play back in real-time. Likewise for Sony YUV.

Personally, I would use Vegas Pro 8.0c with the CineForm HD codec v4.7.0 from CineForm Neo Scene. This will be relatively small and playback in real-time. Neo Scene is relatively inexpensive and indispensable as an intermediary between AE and Vegas for HD.

The catch here is that CineForm doesn't support Vegas 8.1 which is why you will find yourself using 8.0 for lots and lots of reasons... missing codecs in 8.1 being only one of them.
